Why does everybody act like there is nothing to evade Courser of Kruphix or Sylvan Caryatid?

Seriously, I think that my little friend Temur Charm disagrees with that. But I'd like everyone else's opinion.

What exactly do you mean "evade?"

I simply Despise both of those cards. (See what I did there?)

As in, you can't get passed it, it's always going to block your creatures. That's what I hear, that they are guaranteed to block my fatties.

Honestly though...if you can't find a way to get through them, you're doing it wrong.

They're only "guaranteed" to chump when the game's about to be lost or they don't matter anymore. Nobody's going to throw a Courser of Kruphix under a Siege Rhino unless it's necessary to block or Courser won't be missed.

Also, Temur Charm is, to my knowledge, the only card in Standard that has an effect like that other than War-Name Aspirant . There was a similar card last Standard, Seismic Stomp , but that didn't see too much play.

the main problem isn't in their inability to be passed, it's getting passed what they throw out next that's the problem.

The two aren't a godsend answer to any and all attackers. Heck, standard's full of midrange and monsters that are easily capable of attacking into these two. The strength of this core comes in their utility and ability to block a few threats. It's enough to get decks going.

Barrage of Boulders does it too.

I don't understand how I forgot that card when it won me 3rd place at prerelease.

War-Name Aspirant can get easily by the sylvan, Frenzied Goblin can get passed both, so can Arena Athlete ,and Chandra, Pyromaster . I wouldn't want to waste a Stoke the Flames on it, but yeah, Mardu Charm gets him too.

GoldGhost012 says... #14

None of Frenzied Goblin , Arena Athlete , and Chandra, Pyromaster can touch Sylvan Caryatid , because they target, and hexproof stops targets.

if theres absolutely no way youre getting passed courser and caryatid, you should rethink how you play magic

Man, if only there were some keyword that let creatures like fly over other creatures. If Wizards ever made that they should call it flying,

I think lookoutimscary may be on to something there.

That said, I think Portoman has misunderstood a powerful, synergistic pair of cards that can be enough to get a midrange deck moving as a pair that can not be stopped. There are plenty of ways to get through, around, or rid of Sylvan Caryatid and Courser of Kruphix , but they are just 2 very powerful cards in the format right now.

It doesnt handle caryatid, but rec sage is the bane of courser

I think lookoutimscary seized a good thought with that 'flying' thing... (see what I did there?)

My bad, spaced on the hexproof for sylvans,.

capriom85 I've never said that they weren't powerful, I just said that the people at my LGS think that they can block with them all day and not expect answers, so I asked for everyone else's opinions, or their answers to it.

October 9, 2014 1:48 p.m.

capriom85 says... #22

ok, Portoman, my bad. It's the rest of your LGS that is mistaken, then, because as someone who runs them both and loves them, there are plenty of answers. I mean...have they ever blocked something with a power 3 or more with Sylvan Caryatid ? It doesn't survive...

do they? or was everyone hyperbole for someone?

I play both and hadn't noticed that trend myself.

I always have to eat a couple of hits.

If anyone wants a way to target Sylvan Caryatid , or any hexproof creature, for that matter, then try Polymorphist's Jest . It targets all of your opponents' creatures without targeting them! And by that, I mean Polymorphist's Jest says exactly, " Until end of turn, each creature target player controls loses all abilities and becomes a blue frog with base power and toughness 1/1." "Each" is not "target," thus bypassing the Caryatid's hexproof ability. Then all you'd need to do is deal 1 damage to each creature your opponents' control somehow...perhaps...Scouring Sands ?

It's a very good way to get rid of each and every creature your opponents' control!

Fleecemane Lion, Siege Rhino, Stormbreath Dragon, Mantis Rider, Butcher of the Horde... these are the creatures I'm seeing a lot of these days, and each of them makes me feel like the defensive capabilities of my Courser and Caryatid are just not enough. Hell, Titan's Strength owns them easily.

Is this a troll thread?

The courser's life gain, and it's ability to negate the downside of fetch lands is my biggest gripe concerning him. A 2/4 for three isn't that big of a deal.

OP_Magikarp says... #27

In a green deck, having a 2/4 or a 0/3 for a few turns really isn't that big of a problem. You should be worried about what is going to be played next which, in green, is most likely going to be massive
