Wild Slash...why?
So does Magma Spray. And that exiles, Slash is like ac $2 uncommon. It confused me.

It's as a good card to be sideboarded. If you see your opponent is using cards such as Guard Gomazoa or Fog a lot, this card becomes fantastic. Cards that prevent damage can give your opponent an extra turn to stay alive or consistenly block in the case of Guard Gomazoa or its couterpart, Fog Bank. When not trying to prevent damage, it functions as a lower cmc Lightning Strike that deals one less damage, fantastic for finishing off a blocker. On top of all of this, it's uncommon. Because its uncommon, it's cheap and easily accessible.

Magma Spray can't hit the face, so it has less utility.

If you attack with a Siege Rhino into a Stormbreath Dragon, wild slash can stop the protection and it will die.

kills Seeker of the Way, Goblin Rabblemaster, Rakshasa Deathdealer (with no pumps or regen) among others for which is a lot easier to leave up than . In the late game when your opponent is stabilising it can go upstairs top their face to deal the last few points of damage

The ubiquity of taplands means decks are in the market for a 1 mana removal spell that they can play on turn 2 and play another tap land.

When I first saw Wild Slash being played I thought the same thing (except I knew it was better than Shock). Then I realized all of the pluses to playing it and started playing it myself. it really does help a lot by killing those turn 2 and 3 creatures. It can also deal damage straight to the face unlike Magma Spray.

Standard is overrun with x/2 or less creatures right now so being able to kill them without losing tempo is a big deal, the taplands in standard + Wild Slash costiong 1 also lets you curve better. Magma Spray will do the same but will be a dead card when you come up against Midrange or Control decks with no creature targets. So being able to throw the burn at the opponent in game 1 is a big deal, the you just sideboard it out if it lacks creature targets. The Ferocious is just extra icing on the cake and will come up at times, the decks that run it are also very tempo dependant and having efficient ways to remove blockers while triggering prowess is another upside for the card.
Right now it's very well possitioned in the standard Meta and as long as people are playing loads of X/1's and X/2's it's going to be a staple card in the format for red decks.

It's a strict upgrade over Shock. Shock wouldn't even be a bad card in Modern if Lightning Bolt didn't exist. In Standard, it kills weenies or does 2 to the face for one mana.
