Articles, opinion pieces, analysis: Get YOUR writing published here

TappedOut forum

Posted on Feb. 26, 2016, 5:14 a.m. by ChiefBell

Hi everyone,

For those of you who don't know me, I'm ChiefBell and I'm one of the people that helps around this website. Mostly I move threads and delete reposts, but I also publish articles.

I often see people requesting more content, or asking about how to get their own writing published here, and that's why I'm posting this.

If you want to produce a piece of writing for TappedOut here's what you need to do:

  • Comment on my wall to let me know that you have an idea for an article, or that you've already written something. I will discuss with you the best way to contact me.

  • Send me the article or idea including three main pieces of information: a title (e.g. Opinions on this standard), a tagline (e.g. Is this standard the best ever?), the main content.

  • I will post the article in a private deck that I will share with you so that we can make edits together, until we are both happy and ready to publish. I am more than happy to assist with grammar- and spell-checking, content analysis, and more.

  • Once everything is finalised I will publish the article to the front page of the site.

Questions? Comments?

Also please note that I am not the only one in charge of article publishing. Spootyone in particular can also publish. So if you have any ideas you can approach either of us.

EverythingIsK: Tell you what. Why don't you make a mock up (doesn't have to be perfect) of what that would look like in Google Docs and share it with me

[email protected]

I can take a look at it and see if it's the sort of thing we're looking for. In most cases, it will be. I just want to make sure beforehand is all. Sound good?

EverythingIsK, I'm working on a folder holding all the primers here if you'd like to help me fill it, or pull a deck from it. Currently I only have 3 decks, but I'm looking to add more. Hope this helps, and if you write the article, please tag me! I'd love to add more to that folder!

Hi everyone!

I'm just checking in to make sure that everyone knows where we stand at the moment.

We've had some really great content coming in over the last week or so - so thank you to everyone for that! It's been great. Now due to how much stuff we've been receiving we've decided to organise structured releases because there's just to much to edit all at once to do a continuously rolling schedule. From now on I aim to release new content on Monday and Thursday.

The advantage of this is to make sure that you all get enough time to read the new releases and not be bombarded with new content every single day. It will also ensure that people's writing does not get lost and swamped by other content - it'll keep things nice and controlled and give everyone a fair chance to be featured without a thousand other articles competing for space.

Thanks ever so much for your cooperation and as always feedback is welcome. But keep it coming guys, it's been great!

Hey guys! I had an article idea earlier today and I'd like some feedback; basically do it or don't. As I'm sure plenty of people have noticed, the Shadows over Innistrad spoilers have started trickling in, starting with the last MTG story last Wednesday. There are a lot of interesting things happening, including the story of what happened to get us back on Innistrad. So what I'm thinking of writing is the story of what happened on Innistrad previously, obviously condensed quite a bit. A brief look at how Innistrad came to be, the stories of some of its notable figures and cards (such as Sorin, Gisa and Geralf, Thalia, Guardian of Thraben, and Geist of Saint Traft), and the original block's ultimate conclusion. Probably including links to the actual stories as well so people can read them for themselves.

I do still have article privileges from my previous article series (RIP), so it can be posted whenever it's finished or whenever there's a lull in article making. I'm also on spring break and should have time to finish this in a few days (here's hoping). If anyone wants a beta reader or something for their own articles, I can also help with that.

GoldGhost012: That would be great! I know I'd read it. If you are able to, write it up in google docs and share it with me so i can help proofread, edit, etc. Glad to have you back!

I apologize for my lack of submitting content, I will email one of you shortly, I've been a bit distracted with some new releases, but I'll have some articles drafted soon.

March 7, 2016 9:15 a.m.

ChiefBell and Spootyone:

I am home for spring break and had a sudden desire to write a one-of article. I am currently writing a simple outline to organize my thoughts. Would either of you have a few minutes to discuss the topic and help me stay on track?

March 13, 2016 1:33 p.m.

ChiefBell says... #10

Yeah I can!

March 13, 2016 1:55 p.m.

Awesome! Does the T/O PM system sound good? I can share it for editing / commentary via Google docs once I have something written.

March 13, 2016 2:56 p.m.

Spootyone says... #12

My apologies ducttapedeckbox. I was at GPDC this weekend. I AM available now and henceforward, though.

March 13, 2016 10:27 p.m.

No worries! How was it?

Does the TO PM system work for now? I've started to draft an article but I'm starting to think it isn't well organized.

Would love to run it by you and/or Chief.

buildingadeck says... #14

I figured this is a decent place to ask this: I'm looking to write a follow-up to my first Food for Thought article (a series dedicated to showcasing strategies in different draft formats), and I'm wondering if people would be more interested in reading another article on the Oath draft format, or if they'd rather read something on Vintage/Legacy cube draft? I'm also open to speculating on Shadows over Innistrad in sealed and draft, but I'd prefer to wait until we're a little closer.

What do y'all want to read?

March 13, 2016 11:35 p.m.

Spootyone says... #15

Personally, I think you'll find much more success with current set analysis, but the occasional break from that to discuss cards in older formats via cube drafting would be a great way to handle a stale metagame or one you perhaps don't know enough on yet.

March 13, 2016 11:42 p.m.

buildingadeck, I think the standard-legal draft sets are more applicable to the majority of T/O's user base. Your article would probably receive more feedback and discussion if based on Oath or SoI rather than Vintage/Legacy cube draft.

March 13, 2016 11:42 p.m.

buildingadeck I'd love to read an article about Legacy / Vintage cube.

March 13, 2016 11:43 p.m.

buildingadeck says... #18

Sounds like a plan. I've been trying to figure out the UG Archetype in OGW draft right now, so that'll probably be next. I might include a small section every now and again on my Legacy/Vintage Draft play of the week or something like that. (I recently beat an opponent's T1 Black Lotus in Game 3 of a Vintage cube draft; it was awesome.)

March 14, 2016 1 a.m.

Spootyone says... #19

buildingadeck: Played with and against a bit of the UG archetype at the GP. Send me a PM, email, etc. if you want any of my input in any way. I'd be glad to share what I learned this weekend.

Another good week of articles guys. Remember to keep sending articles to us.

March 16, 2016 5:51 p.m.

I'm getting there with mine, I have a decent idea of what to write but putting in into a coherent argument is taking some time. I'll have a draft in the next day or two.

I'll be sending stuff in shortly Hearthstone had a bit of stuff go down, so I've done that and Pokemon, I am really starting to love SoI so you'll probably have an article or two from me in a week or so. Thanks for the opportunity!

Is there any interest in a data-oriented analysis of TappedOut trends? I've been looking for a side project and if there are any questions I could answer with data, I'd be happy to write an article on it.

So far, my brainstorming has me thinking about what cards in standard or modern people love to brew with? A possible application could be telling you what kind of cards you could want in your trade binder.

Or I could analyze what the "most brewed with" cards are during spoiler season, as a possible way to gauge demand for them. I'm just spitballing, but if any of these sound interesting, I could investigate further!

pastamancer: That actually sounds like an incredibly interesting idea. How about you email me and we can progress this further! :)

Hi, I know I keep going on Hiatus, but I gotta put College above all else and it makes it really hard to juggle everything, but I am working on some articles for the the near future and want to at least try and get back into the swing of things :D If there is any way I can help anyone else looking to get into writing or anyone already writing that needs help just let me know. I have some editing experience for my school newspaper so if you need something proofread, just shoot me a message :D

Can an article be about a rouge deck you play in Modern competitively and why rouge decks are vital to the health of a format?

April 3, 2016 10:42 p.m.

Arvail says... #30

I'd say both ideas are interesting, but they definitely ought to be separate pieces.

April 3, 2016 10:48 p.m.

Spootyone says... #31

I think a piece on the importance of Rogue deckbuilding could be a good read, but needs to be executed well to not end up as a "Look at what I did and look how important I am" piece.

I'm not saying that's you by ANY means. But it's definitely something to be careful about. Wanna send me a rough draft and see where it goes, Kingofsouls? I'm very interested in seeing what you come up with.

I feel like I could do another article. Maybe something along the lines of why playing hateful/mean/annoying decks is okay at every level of play (as long as you do it properly). I feel like the overwhelming majority of non-regular TO users are fairly casual EDH players. It's hard to come up with stuff that would appeal to wide audiences, but I also like defending unconventional views.

Spootyone says... #35

TheDevicer: I'd be more than down with seeing more from you. Your last piece seemed to generate quite the buzz and discussion, even if not all of it was the most respectable from everyone haha. I like those who think outside the box and it appears you fall into that category.

GoldGhost012 says... #36

I'm going to write a quick opinion piece on the pulls of my SOI box and evaluating the monetary worth versus the worth of pack cracking enjoyment.

April 8, 2016 6:06 p.m.

Spootyone says... #37

Awesome! You know where to send it to, Ghost.

April 8, 2016 7:55 p.m.

Spootyone - I am working on a piece about Budget Building and how to find fitting replacements when playing Standard, it kind-of fits with my life right now, having to actually be responsible with my spending for the first time in my history playing Magic, and how I am going about making the transition. I can send it to you before I think about posting it if you would like. (I can publish articles myself, but I know budgeting is a widely covered subject that may already be a bit overused so I understand if you would rather me write a different piece on a less widely-covered topic)

April 12, 2016 10:29 a.m.

Spootyone says... #39

OutspokenFerret: Sure send it to me and I'll take a look at it to proofread it, etc. I think what you chose to write was a good topic. If people are tired of budget pieces they certainly aren't saying as such!

GoldGhost012: How's your piece coming along?
