Bookmarking threads?

Was going to pitch this directly to yeaGO, but I figured I'd see if anyone else even thinks it's a decent idea and would add functionality to the site.

I'd like to see about implementing a feature that would allow each user to assign up to five or ten (keep the number reasonable) "bookmarks" for certain threads or decks.

Context:

The notification system that currently exists is great for keeping users updated on discussions that develop over the course of several site visits. However, it's annoying to remain subscribed to a constantly-active thread (anyone subscribed to Just Chatting probably knows this sentiment well) because you're bombarded by notifications and don't necessarily feel like checking them all. But you still want to keep tabs on the thread itself, and you want a way to find it easily.

Additionally, it's somewhat annoying to click the link in a notification, be taken back to the first page of the thread, and have to find where you left off.

Proposal:

What if we had a system that allowed a user to bookmark or favorite a thread? (Use the following numbers for ease of reference in your comments.)

  1. A bookmarked thread would appear with its own line at the top of the notifications dropdown and would provide you with a link to the thread itself.
  2. Maybe the feature could allow you to mark a certain comment and later reopen the thread directly to that comment or its page.
  3. Bookmarked threads would not generate new lines in your notification feed. Instead, they would display the number of posts since your most recent bookmark in that thread.

Now, some of these features could probably be folded into existing notifications (I'd personally like #2 to be implemented so it's easier to resume where you left off in a thread), but maybe the ability to locally save certain threads for later (as opposed to bookmarking them in your browser, which may present issues for users who switch between computer and mobile access) is appealing.

Thoughts?

As an aside, it would be nice to have a way to link comments themselves. Currently, the comment count resets on each page of a thread, so you have comment #1 on page 1, comment #1 on page 2, etc.

If we had shortcode that allowed us to write, for example, [[comment:134]] and produce a clickable link that took us to comment #134 in the entirety of the current thread or deck, that would be great.

Changing the numbering scheme to actually reflect total comments by thread instead of by page would be one step in doing this, and it would also simplify the bookmarking scheme because you could reuse functionality between features.

Femininity approves of this message!

And as for the code, I personally like the countdown reset for post totals. It makes things look nice and clean. The code itself could just be [[comment:thread-slug page# post#]]
