Chat system

TappedOut forum

So I'm sure I'm not the first to think of this, but how hard would it be to develop a chat system similar to what facebook uses?

We'd then be able to IM our "friends" on here, create chat rooms, etc...

Thoughts?

I like being able to escape from forum posts when I tick people off.

Having a chat system would mean people could find me, and type furiously at me. And that's a no-no, especially when I've been working.

yeah, I'm against it also, but there are many ways to make it work, you don't want to do the facebook stuff, while possible. IT's not trivial, even with established systems.

IRC Chat with a link on t/o to a mibbit page is a better.

Oh, I'm not against it, I would just want a way to go offline on it, while online on the site, so I can hide.

We could make it where you'd have to be mutual friends with them first before they can message you.

What does it add to the site in general? I mean if you're friends you can put them on gtalk or what not....

I say don't tie any of the sites features to Facebook as I don't use it. I would enjoy some chat feature though. It would be helpful when actively working with someone on a deck. More information traded quickly without have to constantly refresh pages and getting a million notices on your subscription feed.

IRC chat wouldnt be bad but the only problem I could see would be with the moderation of it. Depending on the size of the community and the present rules. You might have some users just to idiotic things to try and be annoying. Though I would assume most everybody there would be rather chill and relaxed.

Also users who have questions will more likely ask them in the chat because it is usually answered faster. Forum activity might slow down a little bit too. Of course I am just assuming this from past forums and projects I have been around/involved with.

I'm not saying it has to tie in to facebook. Just an IM system like facebook.

I am gonna add this at some point. basically I want to have a global chat where anyone can go, but I also want to have person-to-person messaging aka chat.

Can you have a "go unavailable" setting, because this is a no go for me 90% of the time.

Person to person chat would be great but you should only be able to do it with people that you're friends with. I'd love to talk to people about card design.

It will probably be a large chat when you can message other users whilst in there. So we could all be in a chat room, then you can have a couple of private chats up while you are in there. That is how another site I used to use did it. Not a MTG site, but It worked very well.

Seems pretty awesome. I mean, sometimes the comments fly fast enough that you feel like your in a chat room. It would make a lot of things much easier.

I really want this to happen. I would enjoy being able to talk to my friends on here as opposed to just bumping into them in the forums and deck helping eachother.
