Comments for Deck Updates

Currently there is no comments system in place for updates on deck pages. This is a missed opportunity for a lot of conversation about decks.

Updates are about the most current changes someone has made to their deck. Not being able to comment specifically about updates is a big loss of possible discussion.

Someone can post a comment, using the comment form at the bottom of a deck page, about an update and their comment will be displayed in the comments area of the page, but this comment isn't tied to the actual update which they are commenting on.

The newest update of a deck is shown to the viewer and all other previous updates are not. Clicking to view any of the previous updates opens the update up in a new page which is completely different than the deck page. This new page then has comments at the bottom of it, but you can't add new comments, there is no comment form to post comments. The comments also seem random and have nothing to do with the actual update.

What would be a nice feature is to add a comment form to post comments to the most recent shown update on a deck add the form at the bottom of the update. Also add this same comment form to the other previous updates which open in a new page, add it at the bottom of the new page. Any comment that someone makes about an update using this form is tied to the actual update. All comments about the most recent update which is shown on the deck page would be placed inside the actual update.

This system would allow users to comment specially about updates using the comment form inside the update and comment about the deck using the comment form at the bottom of the deck page.

By posting on a deck page, you're effectively commenting on the most recent update or version of that deck. I'm not sure why there would need to be a special system to comment "on" the update.

I also don't think it's valuable to comment on old updates because (1) those comments would get lost and (2) old versions of the deck are generally obsolete; comments about the current version would be more useful.

@yeaGO: I did notice that clicking on an update reveals the comments made leading up to that update rather than those made after the update went into effect.

the old update mechanism used to optionally move a batch of comments to the update. you actually used to be able to comment on the update here, too. but i realized that was insane. now, yes as epoch notices, it takes the update comment range and makes that the conversation. well, i'm at an impasse.

what if we just make the comments that show on an update all of the comments after that update (and before a possible next one?)

I agree with that last approach.

I wonder too whether it would be useful to turn deck changes into autocomments (e.g., if you update any of the boards, a post automatically gets generated in the deck discussion summarizing the changes).

Oh wow, that would absolutely spam my comment section. A small update here, let's see how that looks, oops, new comment...

Yes, it would be useful, but it should be optional.

I think we currently do send deck update notifications to subscribers of decks

"what if we just make the comments that show on an update all of the comments after that update (and before a possible next one?)." This approach is much better than it's currently set up.

The problem with comments is there's no organization of them. They are all stored in the comments area of a deck page. This would be fine if the user always stays on the deck page, but they don't. They have to go a new completely different page to read about previous updates.

If you're only making comments show on the update page that were made after the update was made and before a new one many of them will have nothing to do with the actual update because not all comments after an update is made are about the update. Some are still talking about other things about the deck and the rest of the deck is not present on the update page.

I honestly don't think it matters whether people talk about the update specifically or the deck in general. I don't see any real necessity for trying to distinguish between them. Old comments are (I'm guessing) rarely referenced, and, even when they are, it's probably not necessary that they pertain to the update itself.
