Custom names, who does them?

TappedOut forum

Posted on May 2, 2013, 1:23 a.m. by ShadowLand

I see peoples names on here all the time that have been tweaked with a haze around them or have split colors between top and bottom. But who does them that way or knows the way to do this? I am interested.

ShadowLand says... #1

If you want it all to have the same shadow, correct

SandyDufresne says... #2

So, if I want to text-shadow with different colors, would I have to do it for each box?

May 2, 2013 10:40 p.m.

acbooster says... #3

Right, like mine is a gradient one, so I needed to change the color for each one.

May 2, 2013 10:41 p.m.

SandyDufresne says... #4

Also, do I copy and paste or are there other symbol that I need to put in? I'm a doofus when it comes to this stuff.

May 2, 2013 10:41 p.m.

SandyDufresne says... #5

Like if I wanted a Red letter with black shadow would I put: #FF0000;text-shadow:#00000 0px 0px 10px

Here is a hexadecimal colour chart. That is the code you use for specific colours ( ex #FFD700

makes Gold

) Also the font part he put in there lets you change what type of font your name is displayed in as mine is Edwardian Script itc I just put that in the desired font under font family.

SandyDufresne says... #7

You guys are awesome. Thanks.

May 2, 2013 11 p.m.

ShadowLand says... #8

There should be a # before the corresponding color code you want at the very beginning of the code, other than, just substitute the color code and font name (I would recommend using a simple font that will be recognized by all browsers) and plug it in where you need it.

May 2, 2013 11:16 p.m.

Tried putzing around with my name and my name changed to "error" for a second when I tried to save it.

But then it seemed to display it just fine. Does my name seem more bold than usual?

ShadowLand says... #10

I am going to mess around with the effects a bit more over the weekend if I get time, and will mock up some VERY specific instructions and try to submit a featured thread so that people can do lots of fun things with their names, not just shadow effects.

May 2, 2013 11:19 p.m.

Tried changing font to Times. Test.

May 2, 2013 11:20 p.m.

... Seems I'll have to wait for the tutorial. It looked fine on my profile page.

May 2, 2013 11:21 p.m.

ShadowLand says... #13

Yes landgrafb, also something else, don't get discouraged if it doesn't take effect immediately, mine didn't start showing up when I posted threads until the next day.

May 2, 2013 11:22 p.m.

lol my comment has my old font and your comment has my new one. Delayed update ftw.

May 2, 2013 11:23 p.m.

DukeNicky says... #15

Yea everyone should take note that changing your name takes hold immediately on your own profile, but the site seems to need an update a lil bit later for it to show every where else

Say I have the following marquee set up:

< p>

< marquee behavior="alternate" width="100%">

< font color="BLUE"; size="4.5">

< b>

Oh, God! Oh, God! We're all going to die!

< /b>

< /font>

< /marquee>

< /p>

Removing the space after each < would give me the following:

Oh, God! Oh, God! We're all going to die!

I've tried a bunch of different things to get the text color to have a green (#008000) text shadow but it always changes the color to pink or purple. It seems like it's a mixture of the two color tags. What do you think I should do to get the same effect in a deck description?

May 2, 2013 11:23 p.m.

ShadowLand says... #17

In a couple hours it should update and everything you posted and will post will change.

May 2, 2013 11:24 p.m.

@Heartpiercer: Please dear god don't do that to a deck page. Else it's gonna get all MySpace up in this b***h. Nobody wants that to happen.

May 2, 2013 11:27 p.m.

lolololol xDD

May 2, 2013 11:30 p.m.

ShadowLand says... #20

You need to block around what you want the shadow to effect and it has to be separated from the current color block you are using. If I wasn't on my phone tonight I would give you a rundown.

after font color="blue";size "4.5";shadow-color="008000"; 0px 0px 10px;

or something like that

May 2, 2013 11:30 p.m.

DukeNicky says... #21

@landgrafb well than don't go looking at Hello Sweetie hahah I had to do it just there xD

May 2, 2013 11:31 p.m.

ShadowLand says... #22

Also, I hope you are asking that to put on your personal blog or something, not on here. Lol

May 2, 2013 11:32 p.m.

SandyDufresne says... #23

@landgrafb: I actually haven't noticed a difference in loading a page. I've done it to a few of my deck description like Define interesting and Disgusting (haha, shameless plug for my decks on your thread). Does it cause a problem loading for you?

May 2, 2013 11:33 p.m.

SandyDufresne says... #24

The one for Disgusting has been on there for almost two years.

May 2, 2013 11:34 p.m.

DukeNicky says... #25

@Heartpiercer you forgot to remove that space after each "<"

May 2, 2013 11:34 p.m.

Not a loading problem. It's just...so...ugly. AAAAH!

May 2, 2013 11:35 p.m.

DukeNicky says... #27

Also I don't see anything in your description for Disgusting

May 2, 2013 11:35 p.m.

ShadowLand says... #28

It only will cause a problem depending on what browser type and version they are running. Different browsers have different stages of CSS programming and the HTML layers differently with different browsers.

May 2, 2013 11:36 p.m.

Cuz he linked someone else's deck.

May 2, 2013 11:36 p.m.

I think it's worth mentioning that the shadow effect makes it really hard to read your name DukeNicky. It's better than when your font was all swirly, but you kinda look like a purple smudge if I don't focus hard enough. Needs more contrast.

May 2, 2013 11:38 p.m.

SandyDufresne says... #31

Disgusting probably works better.

May 2, 2013 11:40 p.m.

DukeNicky says... #32

Really? I don't have an issue reading it...damn it time for number 9 I guess :p lol

So hard to find the right look Purple/gold don't work nor does purple/silver apparently

May 2, 2013 11:43 p.m.

ShadowLand says... #33

Lol, landgrafb, did you try your marqee with the text I gave you in that post?

May 2, 2013 11:59 p.m.

Not gonna marqee. Marqees on web pages are like socks with sandals...or mullets with anything. They're just so baaaad.

May 3, 2013 12:25 a.m.

ShadowLand says... #35

Lol, sorry, it was Heartpiercer I was trying to summon.

May 3, 2013 12:32 a.m.

SandyDufresne says... #36

No, it didn't work. I tried a few more things but was unsuccessful. If you figure it out, let me know.

May 3, 2013 12:37 a.m.

ShadowLand says... #37

I will try messing around with it and see what I come up with. I will let you know!

Joshuawesome says... #38

I just wanna go on record and say that this thread is awesome, and without it I would still have a mundane name like the rest of the peasants. Thanks guys!

May 3, 2013 6:10 p.m.

SandyDufresne says... #39

@ShadowLand: Maybe you could do a weekly or monthly column about different things you could do with HTML and other fun stuff. I bet you could put it up as a feature article.

May 3, 2013 9:16 p.m.

ShadowLand says... #40

You're welcome Joshuawesome, and I will take that into consideration Heartpiercer, lol

May 4, 2013 12:45 a.m.

Denial048 says... #41

Thank you guys so much for this thread! I just stumbled across it, and changed my name to look a fair bit better than before (though you probably can't see the changes yet XD)

Looking forward to an article/series of articles on basic coding tips!

May 6, 2013 1:09 a.m.

ShadowLand says... #42

It will be a couple of days before I can get to that, :)

One of my kids decided to step on my laptop over the weekend and now I have to wait for the new screen to get in. So its my cell or nothing at this point.

May 6, 2013 1:15 p.m.

SandyDufresne says... #43

Ah, those dang kids. I'm lucky mine have done that yet.

May 6, 2013 2:42 p.m.

Stygian333 says... #44

I'm still not quite sure if this isn't working because it takes time or because I have the formatting all wrong.

May 15, 2013 8 p.m.

ShadowLand says... #45

What are you trying to accomplish Stygian333?

May 15, 2013 9:13 p.m.

Stygian333 says... #46

I was trying to copy the shadow effect just to see what happened, and then tweak it from there. Since I only wanted one color, I just added the mentioned code about shadows to the end of the first box only. The code I'm running right now, below, changes the colors but nothing else. #33CC33;text-shadow:#00000 0px 0px 10px #009900 #006600etc.

May 15, 2013 10:31 p.m.

ShadowLand says... #47

33CC33;text-shadow:#000000 0px 0px 10px; #009900, etc

try that

May 15, 2013 11:32 p.m.

ShadowLand says... #48

I think you missed a semi colon after the shadow effect

May 15, 2013 11:33 p.m.

Stygian333 says... #49

That was a formatting issue. I added the semi colon, and eventually ended up changing 000000 to FFFFFF and I saw results, switched it back, added it to each and can see a faint black glow. I think with more testing I'll be able to get the results I was looking for. I understand all the formatting except for what the 0px 0px 10px is refering to. The size of something, I presume the text. Do I just need to fiddle with colors to make the shadow visible, and not one of those settings?

May 16, 2013 8:50 a.m.

ShadowLand says... #50

The 0px 0px 10px is dictating the shadows' mass, if you would like a larger shadow, increase the number from 10 to say 25, the 0's you could mess around with, I believe those are transparency style settings
