Deck ratings?

Why is it that theme decks out score good solid decks on here? Even the bad themed decks that would not have a chance vs a half way decent deck.

The scores are just popularity ratings. There's lots of people that probably vote for theme decks automatically regardless of effectiveness. If the rating system was a little more complex it might interesting; there could be different vectors to measure (deck effectiveness, "coolness", whatever).

The deck score doesn't necessarily reflect how powerful or effective a deck is. A user upvotes a deck if they like the deck. This can be because the deck is very good, or if it is amusing, ingenuitive or fun to play with. Themed decks fall into the second category. For example, my Discard deck has a similar(ish) number of views and is clearly more powerful than my Battle of Wins! deck, but Battle of Wins has more than twice as many votes as the deck and description are funny.

Think about it. How many variations of that esper control deck have been posted here? We're all familiar with it, we know what it does, and quite frankly, we're kind of tired of seeing them. If someone whips up a really cool rat deck, it doesn't really matter if it's FNM worthy. It's got a lot of flavor and shows a bit of creativity. I'd love to see more people attempt things like Angelic Accord decks.

There are ton of god-awful decks that get upvoted because a) most people are just bad at magic and b) like TitansFTW said - people just upvote decks they like that aren't necessarily good.

Yeah, I upvote decks that I like. Not weather they are competitive or not.

I wouldn't take it too seriously.

Although, it is satisfying to know others like your decks : )

Other people don't like my decks. The reactions in real life are fitting to the lack of up-votes here on tappedout.net. I don't try to make decks that people hate but I am very good at it, apparently.

I really don't understand, to be honest. I stay away from denying resources (with the exception of one counterspell deck and one card removal / discard deck) and infinite combos and tutors. But I make super inexpensive decks that do unexpected things and create threats that they aren't ready for - and people just don't like it.

I guess that when I hear about how many generals and decks are on the hate list it makes me think that it isn't that unusual of a thing? I haven't been able to figure it out but I'm starting to think it all comes down to other factors like social dynamics, popularity contests, and that sort of thing. I haven't figured it out yet, though, like I said.

The best way to get your deck upvoted even if it isn't themed based or funny is to spend a lot of time on the name, opening sentence that you see when you feature the deck, and the description. The best example is Solomon's decks. He/She has spent a lot of time constructing the description, and it is laid out in a way that people can read the entire thing and still understand everything and not get bored after 3 sentences.

A description is a large contributor to a decks score and the best personal example I have for you is my own deck Melted Metal. Before I didn't have a proper description for it and was going like 1/300 score/view ratio. Now with the description added I am easily at a 1/50 score view ration.
