Earning Feature Tokens, Instead of Paying For Them

TappedOut forum

I always wonder why there wasn't some way to earn these tokens aside from coughing up more money just to feature a deck. Obviously, I'm all for supporting Tapped Out, but paying money just to feature a deck 3 times seems a bit silly. I was thinking that maybe based one your activity you can earn them? Like climbing a certain number of T/O ranks in a week, or for having a certain amount of suggestions or comments or something like that. Maybe even everyone gets 1 every 2 weeks if you want to take the fun out of it. Just some way to earn a few here and there without actually having to buy them. Personally I can barely afford to play Magic more or less pay for feature tokens.

People abuse the system a lot as it is

how so?

VampireArmy says... #4

By spamming either comments or card corrections for rank ups

You can already earn them from adding submissions to the card database. Now, that is one of the 'abused systems' as it were as a lot of people upload a lot of substandard materials. (Reminder: You can only update the cards if you are an upgraded user like yourself.)

Regardless, I've never paid for a single feature token and I've handed a few out and kept some decks up for a couple weeks at a time and I still have a bundle of em.

We (the admins, etc.) have thought about it multiple times in the past, but we haven't found a meaningful scale. Points would be an "easy" metric, but you get lots of points just for posting. If we were going to give out a meaningful reward, we'd expect meaningful contributions in return.

We've also thought about overhauling he point system such that it favors actions like answering questions, making helpful suggestions, and the like. However, the point system is relatively insignificant given the other things on the to-do list.

very true. Just something I was curious about.

I would like a prompt screen if you decide to use feature tokens, as I accidently used one today, when I was perusing the site on my phone.

Maybe this isn't the place for suggestions, but seeing as how its minor.....

Tagging yeaGO for input and to add a confirmation screen to prevent accidental token use (I happen to think that's a wise idea).

I mean, I'll probably never use the remaining two, so it's not a big deal, but on mobile devices, when loading is an issue, especially on my phone, clicking on one thing that I see, may not be what the software sees me clicking on.

vampirelazarus: I hate when that happens. I gave you one of mine as recourse.

That's why I love the MTG community. 90% of people will do what they can to help others out. When it comes to playing...we're all cut throat my deck is better crazy...but as a community we take care of our own. :p

ahaha. yeah. i got a lot of tokens i submitted all the m14 commons/uncommons, but sadly, i've used them all :P it has gotten harder to get tokens through that method though because Femme_Fatale is extremely precise when it comes to it. not that thats a bad thing by the way

Femme_Fatale says... #16

I don't actually get that many tokens from card submissions. I probably got maybe ... 5? in the total of KTK. I think there was about 20 for M15, but that is because I resubmitted the entire set like three times because of the screw ups yeago's stupid automatic importing did to the card database system.

But I'm soon about to be out-card submitted by Duck_of_doom. He's been doing the VMA, duel decks and promo sets and has been ranking up those accepted card submissions. I've been focusing on the constant deckmaking I've been doing and not actually studying. At all. I just remembered that I should get to doing the tokens.

Lol fair enough vampirelazarus. Thank you.

Femme_Fatale- you get tokens if you submit a new card. i don't think you get one for modifying or fixing one... but i'm not 100% positive on that

Femme_Fatale says... #20

Then that completely blows the idea of abusing the card submission forum for tokens because I generally am the one to do all of them myself.

My server host doesn't allow me to earn bandwidth or reduce my bill by commenting on things. :)

People should comment because they want to comment. An automated incentive seems pretty weird because quality can't be detected with code.

I was thinking of implementing a system like reddit gold for people to donate tokens to you for being an effective commenter or article author. That can't really be abused and seems to have the same result as people searching for incentives.

And as for your opinion that it's "silly" ... It replaces the banner ad on the site costing the site money. There are many repeat customers of large token packs who I imagine would disagree with you and laugh themselves all the way to FNM on the rocket fuel of feedback the product provides them.

I'd say the users who are best at math and collect their spare change get that it's a pretty easy and cheap solution to the age old question of how to get feedback on your deck.

Femme_Fatale says... #22

Do they have to have those tokens before hand? Or is it generated the moment you "donate it"?

October 8, 2014 1:44 a.m.

yeaGO says... #23

What do you mean

October 8, 2014 1:47 a.m.

tempest says... #24

do you have to have a token to donate a token to the author of the article? like if i have 0 tokens, can i still give the author one?

also, Femme_Fatale, that was kinda my point haha

October 8, 2014 1:50 a.m.

yeaGO says... #25

Of course not :) how could that not lead to the same abuse opportunities as the original problem....

October 8, 2014 2:06 a.m.

yeaGO says... #26

PS I'm probably removing the ability to earn them during card submission because it has done nothing to fix the problem of cards not being added in a timely manner :P

Femme_Fatale says... #27

Now that we are on the subject of points ... I would like to know how they are calculated! I have utterly no idea as to why the system will decide to chop off most of my points that I've earned through card submissions. My only potential answer to this is that you have a system in place that automatically stops people from cheating. If they seem to be gaining too many points, the system decides to chop off whatever they are gaining. Course this is just speculation, and it's been bugging me for a long time now. MUST HAVE ANSWERS.

October 8, 2014 2:36 a.m.

yeaGO says... #28

Lol it's just for card additions. That's it.

October 8, 2014 2:45 a.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #29

So the system checks the source of every point and then removes the ones that are granted through a method that isn't supposed to give points?

October 8, 2014 4:21 a.m.

yeaGO says... #30

If a card is created a point is added.

October 8, 2014 7:08 a.m.

Femme_Fatale says... #31

Right, but I've noticed that points will get deducted the next day. I once went from 21k to 8k.
