Hiding The Username Customize Feature from Non-Upgraded Users?

TappedOut forum

I didn't realize that the username customization was a premium feature at first because when I clicked on it in my settings, I got a 404.

Just for clarity and to not make the site look broken, having that button grayed out or hidden from regular users would be good, in my opinion. What do you guys think?

Hiding all premium features is a good idea, gives less of a confusion for the reasons stated above.

Maybe not hide it, but make it unclickable or include a reminder that it becomes available as part of an account upgrade (with a link to the "extras" page).

Just thinking like a marketer here.

Ah good point, like a little pop-up saying "Sorry, this is a feature available only to upgraded users. Please support Tappedout.net to gain access to this feature!"

Yeah, me as well. I've been getting very confused about all kinds of things because it looks like it should do X but doesn't and then I find out in the forums that X does work but you have to be Y to use X and that isn't stated anywhere for new or unfamiliar users.

I'm not sure a pop-up is the way to go since most people have pop-ups disabled and few people will allow a .net they are not already familiar with to open a pop-up. Probably more like a "Sorry this feature is only available to upgraded users" page with a link to the upgrade page.

We already use pop-ups to dictate whether or not you want to use a feature token Gidgetimer. And if you are joining a site, it makes sense to remove the pop-ups from it because you are accepting that site.

I was unaware of the use of pop-ups there.

I'm not sure I agree that simply joining a forum constitutes you trusting the administrators of that site enough to use pop-ups in a responsible manner instead of as a quick source of revenue or in a phishing or malware attempt. Once you have already made the commitment to spend money on a site it is more logical to assume a level of trust to allow pop-ups. It makes some sense to use them in the spending of feature tokens then. The level of trust implied by a user unfamiliar with the site and may have made an account to use the deck builder; comment on a post; or save a deck they like is a lot lower though. I feel that something to inform users who obviously are new to the community should not be presented via pop-up.
