How do I start a private chat with another user?

I can't work it out.

I have chat enabled for friends and this person is listed as one of my friends.

Normally, you go to the person's profile and click on "Enable Chat". Your partner will get a notification that you want to enable chat and after enabling it, too, you can chat.

I imagine your partner has to enable chat with friends, too.
