How should I crop new Dominaria Legendary Creatures?

So I've been trying to update the Dominaria card file with new spoilers as they come out, but the new Legendary frame makes it difficult to determine how much to crop out. Should I crop images like usual, which leads to the ornate frame at the top cut out like this, or should I include the whole frame, which leads to a lot of black space on the sides like this? You might need to download the second one to see the extent of the black space.

Of those two, I think I prefer the first--but I think both options have their issues. It's sort of a wonky card design!

Could you crop the first image a bit more, such that you've cut off all aspects of the ornate design? It might cut into the edges of the card some, but I don't think it would be that noticeable. That should fix both the large black boarder issue and the issue with blank spaces at the top making it quite clear the pattern has been cut off.

I think both are fine, but considering this will be the model for all legendaries going forward, it is good to get it right the first time. I tentatively vote for number 2.

Cropping should be based off of the ratio of x over y, not so much based off of the border. General guideline for T/O cropping is to remove all black border on the non-southern sides for post M15 cards, and all sides for pre M15 cards. T/O's preview is 198x285, which gives a ratio of 0.69473684...

With this in mind the most optimal crop regardless of border is 239x344 with a ratio of 0.69476744...

Remember that post M15 borders should have an odd X due to the center box being odd numbers, so having equal distances on both sides requires a total odd number border.

I'm currently waiting for yeago's response on a preview change for small images and large images to be able to get perfect/near perfect ratios. 194x280 preview has a ratio of 0.69(28571)... brackets repeating; which is the same as 243x350, allowing for really crisp images and a larger border to accommodate WotC's recent foray into border fiddling. Larger images should have a preview 205x285, due to the larger image you get the more square you get, if slightly. This allows for the high resolution and properly coloured image scans that have been appearing on scryfall to be used within our database.

I vote you should crop them to look how the literal physical card will look

@Femme_Fatale I've been just manually cropping and uploading a ton of images (see basically all of Masters 25, Rivals of Ixalan, etc.) and it appears to be working just fine. I haven't been using set parameters, just eyeballing it. The issue I'm seeing with the new legends is that the black border that naturally appears around the cards is added to the black border that T/O adds, making the actual card look a lot smaller. Thanks for the tip, though.

@AwesomeOctopus So, option #2?

Pieguy396 use gyazo. IT will show you the measurements of your crop as you are cropping. These measurements make sure there is no black border around the card so there is no decrease in size. My testing in the past have demonstrated that getting the closest to the ratio of the preview gives excellent crispness and quality.

I'd have already finished the entirety of dominaria by now but I'm waiting for yeago to decide whether or not he is going to change the preview sizes for me.
