Makin' a Modern Affinity Primer!

TappedOut forum

I'm pretty sure this goes in this forum. Right?

Anyway, yeah, I'm currently working on writing an Affinity primer. I'm posting this message for two reasons:

  1. To make sure nobody else else has written a primer and it somehow escaped my notice. If it has, please point it out to me.

  2. I would encourage any help by others experienced with the deck, particularly to help me with sideboard cards to include, cause from what I've seen on mtgtop8 they can be pretty diverse.

Boy, it sure is a good thing that MTG_Player is aware that this site encourages user-submitted primers as a way to make the site into a better tool for its users, and doesn't believe that stealing someone else's work or redirecting to it is the most beneficial thing that the site could be doing.

Sorry GG012, but I know nothing about affinity, aside from Stony Silence stomps it. I just needed to get this snarky little shot in.

You beat me to my own (less snarky) reply ThatBlueMage.

And actually, you've just helped me, because despite reading about its effectiveness about 3 hours ago, I had completely forgotten Stony Silence existed. facepalm This is why I made this post. So thanks!

@ThatBlueMage: Calm down, he was simply asking if there were other previously-existing primers for affinity. I did not know this site suggested its users submit their own primers. I was merely answering his questions, there were no implied emotions in my responses.

Well see, I wasn't really looking for existing primers as much as people who have experience playing the deck, because I have this (slightly irrational) thing about plagiarism.

Well, here's my tech against affinity, which is just about all I can contribute.

Rakdos Charm , Vandalblast , Wear / Tear , Stony Silence

Then for other decks:

Creeping Corrosion , Nature's Claim , Hurkyl's Recall , Sundering Growth , Steel Sabotage , Kataki, War's Wage , board wipes of all flavors; mostly Anger of the Gods and Wrath of God .

I've got a buddy who plays Affinity, I'll see if I can get him an account on here so he can give you some more insight.

Worth nothing they don't play that many basics so Path to Exile can just be broken. Also Pyroclasm and Firespout :)

True, but almost all Affinity lists I've seen run at least 1 basic in case of a PTE or Ghost Quarter .

1 Island is the industry standard.

Here's a few ideas for sideboard cards to include.
Ancient Grudge vs the mirror.
Wear / Tear vs the mirror/twin/pod/storm/anything with Stony Silence .
Dismember vs goyf/twin/infect.
Whipflare vs pod/anything aggressive that isn't the mirror.
Torpor Orb vs twin/pod/mono green devotion (it's sort of a thing).
Spell Pierce vs control/twin/anything that runs Shatterstorm or Fracturing Gust .
Thoughtseize vs combo/Shatterstorm /Fracturing Gust .
Etched Champion vs removal decks (usually this is only a 1-of since most people run 2 or 3 MB).
Grafdigger's Cage vs pod.
Rule of Law or Ethersworn Canonist vs storm.
Spellskite vs twin/removal decks.
Relic of Progenitus vs living end/storm/goyf/anything graveyard-based.

I'm sure there are many more but those are just off the top of my head.

Thanks for the list TheFanatic.

The basic/4 Glimmervoid choice is dependent on how much Path to Exile you expect, as is the number of Master of Etherium you play. More Paths = play a basic, and play fewer Masters, because Etched Champion is better.

I have some experience playing Affinity, and I'd love to help you if you need any. Make sure you include the innovations with Ensoul Artifact in your primer.

You've already been helping me, thispersonisagenius, haha. I've been using your Melira Pod primer to draft out the way I want to write the primer.

I think I'd have to be crazy to not include or mention Ensoul Artifact . It's already making a splash in Affinity decks.

I think Spell Pierce is too often overlooked in Affinity as it's a strong counter against hate cards, as is Thoughtseize . Also, UWR Control is easily Affinity's worst matchup, it gets very bloody.... So depending on that consider how many Blood Moon s to play or to play at all....Your sideboard options:Graveyard Hate:Tormod's Crypt - weakest but cheapestRelic of Progenitus (if a lot of jund)/Grafdigger's Cage (if a lot of pod)-decent compromiseRest in Peace - Strongest but most stressful upon mana, consider running one.Storm:Ethersworn Canonist , hands down.Twin/pod:Torpor Orb , double duty against your worst matchups.Other:Etched Champion -Very strongDismember - Decent RemovalIllness in the Ranks - In my opinion better than WhipflareAlso, I personally have replaced Steel Overseer completely with Ensoul Artifact and its working great!Just my 0.00004032 BTC (2 cents)!
