Hey guys. Since FAMOUSWATERMELON is currently inactive, yeaGO and myself decided to revive his Modern User Specialties list. If you want to sign up, please just leave a post here and I'll make them into a list at some point. The link to the list is here.
Thanks!
I'm in: you can sign me up on Kiki-Chord, R/G Ponza, and Mono-Black Zombies.

@Dabean27, what decks do you want to be listed as a specialist in?
@Moonbar, I hate Ponza. You're in :)

Is this going to be a "specialties" list, or just a list of the decks that users play? IE is anyone welcome to be on it, like the last one, under any deck without any proof that they're a specialist in that area?
May 30, 2017 11:28 p.m.
Is there any specialist out there when it comes to fixing a manabase? i could really use some help being mostly a monocolor player. ahahaha

I'm interested in death and taxes, soul sisters, and or vampires. If I had to choose one my specialty would be rakdos vamps.

DevoidMage suggestions welcome. maybe you have some ideas to avoid pitfalls.
May 31, 2017 5:22 a.m.
yeaGO maybe have requirements? for instance the person should atleast have X amount of X decks. or maybe have atleast one feature deck on the topic thats been around for a while. which could also be shown on the list next to the usernames.
Ofcourse everyone can hopefully just be honest about being good at a certain deck type which i believe is the direction this will go (and only realistic way it can i think)
also, HEY MAN I HAVENT SEEN YOU FOR AGES. I just got back to mtg after a few year break. this sites still the absolute best in the world. thanks so much man for keeping it beast.

Put me down for Mill, Cheerios, RG Ponza, Infect, Abzan Company (non-Devoted Druid version), and anything else I was signed up on before on the old list that I may have missed.
May 31, 2017 6:09 a.m.
I've probably played over 100 Swiss rounds on G/x Tron, so that's probably my go-to choice for what I'm best versed in.
I've also played a lot of Collected Company (basically since the card was printed and I switched over from Birthing Pod), Storm (not as much lately, however), Rock variants (mostly Jund), and U/R/x Control (Grixis and Jeskai) variants.
I've also done well with Living End and Domain Zoo. However, it's likely there's better players who have played each archetype more extensively than I have.

You guys are all on. I think it will be easier if the list is just built on trust, as this is a community @DevoidMage

Since the point of the specialty list is to be a resource to other users on the site, if someone obviously doesn't know what they're talking about they'll get found out quick. I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I would say to avoid it being a popularity contest, only allow one person to one archetype. It doesn't matter if someone owns a UW control deck, skred, living end, and jund if they're not an expert at all of them. As far as proof goes, primers, tournament reports with a winning record of more than 6 rounds, or a deck that's been on the site and been edited for more than a year, such as smackjack's stasis build; these are how I would qualify a "specialist". I don't think that trust systems work online, and someone looking for legitimate advice could really get burned by someone who only thinks they know what they're talking about.
May 31, 2017 10:28 a.m.
DevoidMage thats kinda what iv been thinking, a deck to represent themselves thats been edited for a certain amount of time. because lets be completely honest. we all tend to exaggerate our skills a littlebit towards decks we like. and while its not usually a problem it could be if a person "just started" liking a certain archtype.

Another thought, only have two to three people listed in a popular archetype. If twelve people want to be on elves, we'll have to find a way to discover who the best two elves pilots are and they'll be the ones on the list. It doesn't necessarily need to be first come first served.
May 31, 2017 10:35 a.m.
DevoidMage what if it would be top2 then a supporting community? like "the elves community" kinda thing. idk i doubt itl get to that but who knows eh?
May 31, 2017 10:38 a.m.
tlhunter07 says... #23
@DevoidMage, that's not bad. I have someone who wants to be listed under about 10 archetypes and I'm like uuuuhhhh...

Servo_Token says... #24
I mean when it gets down to it, do what you want, it's your project. If I were running things, I'd need people to prove that they're worthy of being listed because I would want the list to be a legitimate resource for modern players as opposed to a fun list that anyone can be on. Maybe with like a questionnaire or something.
I'd also offer up positions for general Deck Doctors, to address people like the dude above asking for mana base help. Just people who are generally good at modern that have records of winning and understanding how both the format and proper deck construction work.
May 31, 2017 10:54 a.m.
If you could mark me down for both R/G Ponza and Bogles, that would be great.

My specialties are definitely Delver and Goblins, both of which I've been playing well over a year, and have done well in tournaments with both (nothing too big, Wisconsin doesn't have shit for tournament).
Hope you could put me down for both!

My 3 modern decks are U/G infect Abzan elves and U/R storm

I disagree about the idea of only having a small number of people for each deck archtype. Part of the power of the internet is the ability to collectively combine people's experiences and share them to everyone who might benefit. Limiting that goes against the 'hive-mind' sort of help that leads to decks evolving for the better. I'm probably the one that AtomicEmpire is thinking of that has a bunch of archtypes that I can help with, but that's my personal experience. I really do have all of those decks in paper that I regularly play with any given week, some of which I've been playing since the inception of Modern as a format or since the deck was created in general. I'm very willing to help anyone who has questions about them or offer advice as to how to play those decks, even if their exact build is different than my own. Besides, the more people listed under a certain archtype, the better chance an inquiring person has at a timely response to a question or for a request for advice.

So the reason that I advocate for a smaller list of only people worth their salt is that someone with a question isn't going to go through an entire list of people and ask them all the same question. They're going to go to the first person on the list, and that's likely it. And if that person, or any other person on the list gives out information that either isn't correct to the archetype, or doesn't mesh with the player asking the question (like keeping things budget for example), then what's the point of having the list at all except as a popularity contest and a place to advertise your deck for upvotes?
With a hundred people on a list covering every imaginable archetype, there's no realistic way that someone is going to be able to use it as a reliable source of quality information.
In regards to which and how many archetypes should be on the list, I would vote for tier 1/2 only. Otherwise you again get bogged down by people like this guy who said "Put me down for blue-black Gary". What even is that deck.

I'm not a particular expert on the Modern format, but I do really enjoy playing with my Bogles deck, and I have made it my job to know as much as possible about the archetype so I would like to be put down for that.

Yo, this isn't an archetype per se, but I do a lot of work making budget Modern decks. For players new to Modern, players who are more casual, having a resource who knows how to build for sub-$100 seems good.
Similarly, I enjoy building strange homebrew decks, so I guess I'm volunteering to help out as a catch-all for wacky, budget, or slightly-more-casual decks for the resource. Mention me if I need to explain further. Thanks!
(Also, I know the list is WIP, but alphabetizing it would take it to the next level. Love the list!)

Mono Black is my specialty. Whether it's 8 Rack or Devotion. Also Traditional Jund is one of my specialties.
I sort of have a primer for my Mono Black Devotion Deck and My JUND Midrange Deck. Although I would like to really go all out as far as primers go for both Archetypes.
