MTG theory forum

TappedOut forum

I had an idea that I had pitched to yeaGO! a few days ago but I haven't gotten anything back from him just yet. To save myself a bit of time I will just repost what I sent to him.

I had an interesting idea that I wanted to run by you today. My friend and I have been really getting into some of the earliest decks and what they did to the magic scene and how and why people play what they enjoy playing. It has been very interesting and helpful in deck building and it helps us appreciate the game more and understand where cards and ideas come from just a bit better.

My idea was adding another forum. This forum would focus on MTG/deck building theory. It would differ from the deck help forum in the fact that it wouldn't focus on just a single deck, it would focus on the idea of the deck. It could lead to a lot of interesting and insightful discussions which could lead to some of the most powerful decks ever built to be created because of the website. Along with that, there are lots of opportunities for players, both new and old, to learn new things about the game we all love so much. It could help with card selection, play style improvement, deck building improvement, and much more. Just a thought, but it might be something to look into.

What does the community think?

After I posted this to him I came up with a few more things that could be discussed in this forum. Deck tactics and usage, certain card usage, and analyzing the metas in the various formats.

I'm on the fence about it, I think a series of articles would work better, instead of a whole forum. The deck help forum could be expanded to cover topics such as card selection, play style improvement, and card usage. I do think that discussions on the metas of different formats and the way to play certain deck types in those formats.

As much as I would really like articles as well, it would be pretty hard for somebody with a lot of knowledge and experience with the game to write them. If somebody would do that, it would be awesome though.

The problem is that in a forum, it's very easy to lose track of the direction. The most effective way to do it is probably have articles that can get comments, and then be able to hide comments that you don't want to see because they're just the usual "I agree", or be able to link to specific comments, etc. This system doesn't seem to be built for the same robustness as more general IP boards.

It might be nice to have a separate forum for each major format: Standard, Modern, Legacy, and EDH (which is already represented). This way, all discussion about those formats would be contained and people looking for discussions on Modern decks, ideas, etc. wouldn't be forced to sift through everything else to find them. The general effect of such a system would be akin to what you're proposing, but it would be more streamlined and user-friendly.

On the topic of articles, I think that we should have a strong community of knowledgeable writers who contribute insightful and well-worded articles to the site whenever they wish. It's not something I would use to supplant a forum; rather, they're best used as supplements.

That sounds like one of the best ways to go. For this particular community it is the closest, and like you mentioned most user friendly, way to do what I suggested. It would be able to have the discussions of theory like I mentioned, while still being very specific in the uses if the individual formats, therefore giving people more reasons to use them, and more useful in general.

Format-based forums sound better in terms of making a change over what's here now, because the description of the "theory" forum gives it a broad and unfocused core that makes it pretty much just like the existing Deck Help forum.

Any chance we will see these forums before the new year? I need somewhere to spend my 2 week holiday lay-off.

As it is stated in the deck help forum, it asks for specific help on decks only. In the theory section that I proposed, it could discuss more of how and why that deck type might or might not be working against certain things. For example, how reanimator is doing really good in the standard competitive circuit right now, but what decks can beat it and for what reason. It could examine the popular metas in general for any format and look into why they are working like they are and how they can be defeated. It could also discuss more basic things, like how the 3 core deck styles aggro, combo, and control (and maybe tempo if you include that) are being shown in whatever format. It could still have a pretty narrow focus if described properly, which I can't always do. But the format based forums do sound like a very useful tool as well, and would make a lot of people, like myself, who are interested in that stuff, pretty happy.

I proposed the format forums idea because it better encompasses all aspects of the game. While a theory forum would be nice in lieu of individual format sections, it's a bit vague what might be considered theory and what would just be general discussion. Depending on where you stand, everything about the game could be considered theory. The format forums would address all aspects of their respective subjects, which prevents that difficulty with interpretation.

It also might become a debate over whether something belongs in the theory forum or the general forum. Reducing the chances of users double-posting threads to two separate forums is good since it prevents clutter in the recent discussion feed.

Very good points. Like I said the format forums would be fantastic, and in light of what people have said, most likely the best idea if anything of the sort would be implemented.

To everyone still subbed to this discussion (and anyone stopping by): I created new forums for each format. They can be found on the main forum directory. Please check them out and start some discussion to get things going!
