New Hub: Block/Set/Plane Constructed

TappedOut forum

Hello Tapped Out,

I'd like to suggest a new hub, Constructed. This refers to a deck being constructed only of cards released in a particular plane or set block.

There could be separate hubs for Plane Constructed and Set/Block Constructed, or just a Constructed hub in general.

These style of decks fell out of favor after Khans in 2014, but people still build these decks in a variety of formats.

Thoughts and feedback?

Set/Block Constructed feels more like a format than a hub. Plane Constructed seems to fit well into the Vorthos hub--is it worth making a more specific version of that? I've seen a few Ravnica-only decks, and a couple of Innistrad decks, but how much other variation is there, that wouldn't also fall into Set/Block Constructed? Are there many Zendikar-plane or Eldraine-plane decks?

Any plane or set Commander deck that swaps out only cards from that set are also plane/set locked, I'm already seeing some of these made from Bloomburrow.

Constructed, on its own, is a format, but Block/Plane Constructed is not a format because the restriction can be applied to different formats and does not have to apply to all decks playing in that game.

After bit of poking around, Block Constructed was an official format through 3028 u til the block structure was dropped, and is still listed as such on this site here.

https://mtg.fandom.com/wiki/Block_Constructed

(I'd like to provide a source from the WotC website itself, but they don't seem to have a page for former formats.)

It might be possible to get the format ported over as a hub, but that's outside of my ability, and I think it would cause some confusion to have a format, even on that's not officially supported, listed as something else. This site has a lot of small and obscure formats, so it's not out of place as-is. Let's see if yeaGO or someone has any thoughts.

*2018, not 3028.

Just a note, checked the format listing and it is does not appear updated for any sets beyond 2018. So a user can't make a Constructed format deck for Ikoria, Streets of New Capenna, etc.

Also wondering, as they're releasing set-specific Commander decks now, if there would be overlap between a set block and the commander set released in conjunction with it - would SNC and NCC be part of the same Constructed Block?

KongMing I would definitely consider SNC and NCC to be the same block under these rules. But I don't like the idea of a selection being both a hub and a format. You have a good point, but what's the best way to sort this out? It might be having Block Constructed listed under both, but I'd like to look at other options first.

Maybe a Block Constructed format and a Plane Constructed hub? Just spitballing, not trying to complicate things, thanks for your help.

I definitely would not consider commander products apart of the same block considering how much of them are reprints and contain vastly stronger cards. Every single block constructed would have ot have sol ring as banned. Block constructed was discontinued by WotC when they stopped doing them prior to new Dominaria. Plane Constructed however is an interesting concept and I'll probably consider adding that in the future along with another new format that I think could be warranted.

Femme_Fatale Excellent point about Sol Ringfoil and friends. After 2018, though, Block Constructed and Set Constructed would be basically synonymous. Would, for example, an Innistrad-Avacyn Restored deck be legal to use against a Strixhaven: School of Mages deck, or would the format restrictions only allow Dark Ascension vs. Strixhaven? Or is this not a meaningful question?

I assume it also follows that Shaman of the Pack is legal both in Magic Origins Set Constructed and Lorwyn Plane Constructed. Court of Ardenvale would be legal in Eldraine Plane Constructed, but not Wilds of Eldraine Block/Set Constructed. Am I following your reasoning correctly?

Ah you are thinking too specific here.

Plane Constructed would have no legality, but perhaps have some sort of identifier that people can put in for their deck. I'm a bit hesitant on making anything special here that would require dev time because there's over 50 things in the trello feature to do list and I think this can be accomplished via a format titled Plane Constructed and then a collection of hubs restricted to only Plane Constructed that are just a bunch of planes that have shown up in a main set more than once.
