How does someone get chosen as player of the month?

POTMs are chosen for their high level of (useful) activity. Users who frequently make constructive comments, answer questions, etc. are among the candidates. Overall, it's those who make the most impacting contributions to the community over the month.

Yup, there is no system. It is just getting noticed for going above and beyond for the site and community

Get really involved with the site and most importantly just be a good community member and give good feedback and don't be a troll.
