Pretty Usernames

TappedOut forum

will be back.

i am thinking of a github based system where people can contribute their own css, javascript, etc styles and after a peer review it will go public on the site. any other suggestions or feedback, in the pursuit of letting people safely use advanced styling and scripting, is welcome.

So are you thinking of having a repository of code that people can copy and paste into their settings, or are you thinking of offering a menu of preapproved code that the user will never personally implement (e.g., predefined styles in a dropdown)?

i am thinking people can submit their own custom code to "their directory" in the repo and it will be included as an ordinary dependency when tappedout does deploys.

the current option to disable scripts will still be respected and will opt someone out of this whole mess.

Sounds great, but I can't imagine that there would be a lot of people on the site who have the time and knowledge to go through the code. Maybe just a basic implementation of colors and styles, which users can then combine to make pretty names?

Will this affect those people who already have coded usernames? Or is this just something for those looking to do this in the future?

I think offering a UI for basic customization with the option to enable manual code input is probably best if you can swing it.

I would like to share that there is a nifty little website called Code Academy that teaches people a large number of different programming languages in progressive lessons and for free.

Definitely a strong consideration for those with even a little free time and want to learn more on programming.

Could be a nice utility for some of the users here who would like to learn web-based languages.
