Req for Comments: Nested Comments
TappedOut forum

I'm thinking about implementing nested comments on decks. But with a catch: only the deck owner may create a reply/nested comment. This is to give a Q&A feel to the discussion, as well as emphasize that discussion should be oriented around the goals of the person who created the deck and give them greater control over the conversation. Thoughts?

Absolutely.. I think that sort of thing could really help boost productivity in terms of replying to specific comments/suggestions rather than trying to tag specific people in a comment that may very well be several comments back..

Yep. I notice that's the pattern to threads. People pitch ideas to the user and the user replies. But, its just like you say... tagging etc is ok but could be better. But I don't want anyone to be able to create replies because that could get crazy.

Oftopic, but a little "x" next to notifications in the notifications window to quick unsubscribe would be really really useful. I would say 9 out of 10 notifications i get are from some old deck i commented on or someone writing on some random dudes binder. To go to the deck, scroll down to bottom and click unsubscribe are just too much work for all my subscriptions..

I wouldn't be against nested comments in all relevant areas of the site. It's often that two or three users end up in a disagreement that stemmed from a single comment, and being able to visually ignore that train of disagreement would be fantastic.

Great idea. Why did you even need to ask us? All your ideas are either really good or a necessary function of the site.

I like it. All the extra features and improvements make me want to buy tokens.
smackjack go to the bottom of notifications and click "subscriptions". It's exactly what you are looking for.

I like it. This may be assumed, but I think having the ability to minimize certain nests would be great (so you don't have to scroll forever). Just a +/- sign to expand/collapse it.
How will this work with the deck updates, though? Would the deck owner be able to "archive" a nest but keep others active on the deck page? There are times when I clear the discussion on one of my decks because it is extremely long, but I would love the ability to keep a particular conversation going.

well nests wouldn't go on forever. honestly, i think that's ugly and it leads to the reddit problem of discussion being very topheavy (whatever is at the top tends to dominate).
all i am proposing here is that the owner's can put their own comments in context wherever they want. nobody else can add to the nest.
as for shooting comments back to the deck from the update, well, that's a neat feature idea.

Ahh I misunderstood this a little. I thought the deck owner and the person to whom they're responding could post in that nest. Your proposal sounds like it would be much cleaner, though. However, my concern is that it would still be somewhat tedious to follow a conversation between deck owner and contributor should the discussion span more than two posts.
My suggestion for shooting the comments back did stem from that, but I can still see it being useful. This would give you the ability to continue a certain part of the discussion while clearing quick suggestions and "I like it, +1" comments.

I think it would be a great addition into decks as to avoid the use of the Description box beyond describing the deck. Provided that it is as visible and easily updated like the Updates section, I would be in favor of this addition.
I also think it would increase the user-to-user interactivity given a clearer discussion direction.
tl;dr: I like it.
