Some form of real time chat would be great.

I understand we have the draft chat as it is but it doesn't seem used very much at all. I was thinking maybe we could get some style of Instant Message type of system going where we can see our friends on a list that are online and can start up private chats with them? I also think this would go a long way in helping the trading community if they had a tool where they could chat in a more real time scenario.

That's something you could do with the dead space at the top of the page, perhaps?
Or have a persistent chat window kind of like Facebook's...

If there is a chat, should it be like fb, in that you can only chat with people who have friended you.

I'd say it should be like a chat room where anyone can read anything that anyone else says. That way, you can ask for someone to play magic with or bring attention to your trade binder without making a thread.

I think it would be great to have an IM system here. I do most of my posting from my phone but when I use a PC I would love to have one

I think you should have the option to filter the chat box to show only messages from your friends/followers/disciples, but without anything filtered it would just be everyone. Maybe an additional option to show only messages by certain users.

It would certainly give people more incentive to donate and have awesome colorful names like ours, which would make the site look better overall.

I'd prefer a facebook IM style personally. I get the sense that it would make it easier to really make friends on here too.

It's not a built-in system, but you might want to check this threat out.
