Tapped Redesign

TappedOut forum

Posted on Sept. 8, 2010, 6:45 p.m. by yeaGO

Hello all,

I'm going to redesign the site and I'm interested to know what you guys think.

What do you like? What do you wish was different? What works and what doesn't?

I like that there are two forums but I wish clicking on "forums" sent you directly to general forums. Also the white ring around the logo seems obtrusive to me. I'd like it if the font for the titles was more rigid. Please don't add too much, if any, color in the various backgrounds.

actual forums that could be better organized and so forth would be quite awesome.

yeaGO says... #4

What else ya lookin for in forums? More categories or something?

September 8, 2010 7:56 p.m.

sporkife says... #5

actual forums, phpBB or whatever, rather than the current...well, i'm not quite sure what it is, but it's kinda odd, and seems like just an adaptation of the comment system. I know it looks like the rest of the site, but i think being able to separate the forums into categories (site, by format/casual, non-magic discussion, etc) would make them easier to use and more popular. I'm sure there are a lot of people who use the site and never touch the forums.

separation of pages in the forums when theres so many replies... Just take the scars speculation thread as example.

further grouping of the forums might be better all round.

erm... Is there going to be a changelog for folk who are interested to see whats been done in past and a todo list for the future?

At this moment I can't think what else could be good for the site.

I like how the deck pages are set up as they are, I really don't see how they would need to be changed. But I do think the profile page layout could use re-organizing. I just don't like how sometimes some parts stand out more than others. Like if someone comments a lot, or has a lot of wall posts, but not many decks, the right side of the page seems to go down way too much. Just little things like that. But overall, I agree with zerotimestatechamp. Don't add too much stuff haha.

My OCD would like a couple of small changes:

1) Anytime colors are shown either in list form or in a pie chart, I wish their order reflected the color wheel. For example, if you click on "Cards" at the top of the page and look at the "Color" section of the "Advanced Search," the order should be white, blue, black, red, green. Also, look at the charts on Planeswalkers to Arms. Not only are the two charts not in color wheel order, they aren't even in the same order as each other. The same is true with the new logo.

2) I would like to be able to search only my own decks for a certain card. For example, if I'm trying to find where I've put my Flametongue Kavu s, I can type them into the search option on my "All Decks" page and find out what deck I put them in.

3) The search option in general could use some improvement. For example, when I search for the deck The Coalition, I'm brought automatically to Coalition Relic without any acknowledgment that a deck with that name exists. I'd also like to be able to search for all decks that contain more than one certain card. For example, let's say I want to view all decks that have both Flametongue Kavu and Kavu Titan in them. I don't think the search currently allows you to do this.

4) Maybe something can be done with the multiple printings that each card has? I always input the flavor texts and artists, but those aren't found on the card pages. Right now, it's understandable since there is no differentiation between printings. However, I think some people may like to be able to link to a certain printing in there deck. I remember seeing an elemental deck recently that specifically pointed out in the description that the deck was using the Lorwyn art for Oblivion Ring , since it has an elemental on it. I just thought it could be cool if they could just link to that specific printing and that art would show up when the cursor goes over the card.

5) This suggestion actually comes from a friend of mine (petroscopy) and I tend to agree with it. He wishes that, on the deck page, some of the information appeared directly under the deck name. For example, the format, card count, and add date could be moved up. That way, he doesn't have to scroll down to find if his deck is at 60 cards, it's right at the top of the page after he creates the deck.

I apologize for my OCD. In general, you know I think everything is awesome.

Itd be nice if the Daily Draft Debates had their own section so they wouldn't spam up the articles section.

birdseed says... #14

Oh and I just remembered. On the trade binders where it has the names of the people who have things you want, or want things you have, it'd be cool if you could..

A) Have it so there only one of each person's username.

B) Have the cards they want/have that you want/have next to their name, or somewhere by it.

Those two would be reeeaaally helpful.

have the deck format in the sections bellow represented. (maybe in symbols or something) or have seperate standard, legacy, extended and vintage tournament sections. I dont know about the color scheme on one hand, if you change it, it would lose its tappedouty feel. but on the other hand. it is a little outdated. maybe slight changed to the color pallet and rounded corners? I also really like the drop shadows on the front page. One of my photoshop teachers used to always say when in doubt drop a shadow.

I just got an Android-powered smartphone, and while I've noticed that while I can view most of the site, there are some things that I can't do- like login. Not a big deal, really, but it'd be kind of neat to be able to post and stuff from work ;)

you can use everything on here with iPhone...FYI

cardcoin says... #20

Most stuff here works well on the Android browser... all except drafting... the chat box causes some issues. Oh and @Dr. McMeen - When you attempt to log in. Refresh the page and you will get the "Oops, you already appear to be logged in" message appearing. Then you can surf the site fine... well I can (I'm running Droid 2.1)

Apart from that, I'm constantly checkin' up on my Samsung on this site.

Now back to clarify a few things...

@WiseHeart65

I was referring to editing a comment after it was posted. I can understand if it can't be done because of the way in which previous comments section of this site would be a headache to manage... but being able to edit a comment because of a mistake would be nice. Espicially after you hit the "Post" button. :)

On that note: I'm not sure if this is happening at the moment, but at least having some op's here the facility to be able to edit comments when there is clear grounds for doing so... such as advertising a deck repeatidly on other decks, or duchbaggery, or NSFW being aired (Just suggesting a few things that could potentially annoy certain folk)

Also, pagenating the comments section could be an advantage to those of us who would like to see the most recent comments on the site ESPICIALLY if your on a data plan, or want the page to load up fast (on slower connections) cause lets face facts, not everyone will be on 1+MB connections :)

Personally I feel if your going to go with the logo without the border you might want to find another way of separating the logo from the background so it doesn't all blend in together.

The best way to do this in my opinion would be to alter the colour of the background either the entire section from black or a small section of the background around the header of the page perhaps?

New idea: --- A way to toggle the mana curve graph would be great. I am thinking 3 toggles. 1) the complete picture like it is now. 2) creature curve, and 3) spell curve (non creature curve). This would be rally handy, especially just the creature curve, as i would love to be able to just look at that some times, with out seeing the enchants, instants, and srocerries, and vice versa. This would be great. I have often wanted to curve my creatures and other spells independently of one another.

Moblie usage: --- Only draw back to viewing the site w/ the iphone is no mouse over abilities, so you can't see peoples cards and things w/ out opening a new window or navigating away form the page you were viewing. Not sure if that is even fixable or what the solution could be... but it does hamper iphone surfing.

I would like a way to subscribe to authors or a series of article they are doing. I know that a lot of people are regulars with daily draft or KC's challenges, while others are into card design challenges or the puzzle challenges. I would just like a way to get email updates when a new one posts.

As we all know the article and challenge creators are busy people and so rather than having to check for new content obsessively, maybe be able to subscribe. As I said I would like the 3 follow options: 1.) follow the articles/challenges by author, 2.) follow a specific article/challenge series, or 3.) follow an article type (i.e., puzzle, article, build challenge, card creation challenge, etc.)

squire1 says... #26

I would also like to have access to people's concept cards. I know that a lot of people have created concept cards, but with so many people I have no idea who. Is there a way to have a database of concept cards, that we can easily look through. I imagine the list looking just like the list from an actual set looks now but just for concept cards.

Obviously these should not be accessible for the deck builder.

This is a suggestion from the Q & A section. Not my idea, but I will go into more detail because I think it is a good idea.

Someone suggested a place for archenemy cards. I would suggest that this area be used for Vangard and Planechase cards as well. I think that any would do well in the same position as the edh general spot currently. In the case of the general you could place a Vangard card that goes with your deck. If it is for Planchase or archenemy, that space would be made into a short list of the cards to be used that you can hover over for pics as normal.

BTW - I have put a few suggestions so far, but I would like to say that the site is great. Even if no changes happen, I am always a fan of T/O. And thanks to yeaGO! for all of his hard work.

September 11, 2010 12:31 p.m.

I second that last part of what Squire said. haha

Itd be nifty if you could add a Number Of Times drafted onto the cubes.

A random deck button which you may click to see a random deck on the site where you can just waste a few minutes when bored commenting/seeing other peoples decks.

whew. a lot of issues above.

I created a new forum for discussion of these types of things instead of these really huge threads that become hard to follow (and hard for me to check off one at a time).

I've done some of the suggestions above. I'm going to keep working on the things listed but please create new threads for your future suggestions, so I can organize it a bit better.

@mistergreen527 -- I think I pretty much crossed everything off your list except the last point, which I'm going to think about.

I created a page where card printings can all be shown, although its just the images for now. This is a step... although there are many missing images... =)

September 13, 2010 noon

The random deck idea seems like a really good one. Though it would be nice if you could set it to bring you to a random deck that was altered or discussed within the last week or so.

We only are so picky because we genuinely want this site to improve. It's already the best deck-builder and magic community on the internet. People just need to spread the word at magic events.

yeaGO says... #34

I don't mind the pickiness at all. :). Do you guys browse the decks in the categories on the front page? Do you think another row of columba is useful in adding random decks or other categories?

September 16, 2010 9:59 a.m.

squire1 says... #35

personally the only decks I browse from the catagories are the 'top rated', 'most discussed', 'prerelease', and 'newb'. Mostly the 'newb'.

@yeaGO!:

Thanks! I've definitely noticed the updates as they were happening.

I'll start uploading all of the images. :)

The new version works great on my Android phone. A couple of comments though: 1) The message box that appears each time when I navigate somewhere, start a draft, of refresh a page - it's very annoying. Normally, it doesn't help me at all, and I doubt that this "feature" is useful at all. 2) Secondly, there is no hover event on a touch screen device, so I am not able to see average picks. I can live with that, but an ability to see average picks without hovering would be nice (even on PC, because when I don't know a value of cards in a set, I'd like to see them all at once).

I want to say something, but every time I think of something, it's already been said, lol.

I guess if there would be something I'd add, it's a compiled price guide to different popular stores on the 'net for cards, just like at magiccards.info and other similar sites. It helps with setting up trades and also seeing if you could afford certain cards for decks you'd wanna build.

The current pricing of cards feels a little off still (with the deck price).

If you press then drag away from the link, it often produces the mouse over effect. Give it a try, it's a little clunky to get used to, but it does work...

Love the new logo, but the black part of the pie obviously bleeds out into a black background and makes it look like a piece of the pie is missing. This would also be tragic for black t-shirts (wink, wink), or create the same problem with the white piece for white backgrounds/etc.

I know some people didn't like the white ring around the entire shape earlier...

Maybe try putting a Rare Gold ring around the entire pie design, or a Mythic Orange ring around it?

I dont know if this has been brought up or not, if anyone agrees, nor do know if this will sound crazy, or if its easy to setup for yeaGo or not, but here goes...i think it would be handy to be able to click and get a printable version of a deck, list of cards, the graphs, etc..onto one page without copy/paste madness. This would be even more handy now that i think about it for the TRADE BINDERS! O god, can i get printable binders? that would be helpful, at least i think so...

Recently got a Kiora and REALLY want to add her to my teferi EDH deck. If I do that though i would need to change my Commander to Prime Speaker Zegana or some other UG commander. The flavor of the deck is big creatures and lots of draw.

Take a look and let me know what you think and tell me about any awesome green cards out there cause I dont usually play green.

Green would give you ramp which would enable you to get your cards out earlier. It certainly is very useful. Also cards like Sylvan Library are insane.

February 28, 2015 10:05 a.m.

I agree with ChiefBell that green gives access to a lot of nice stuff. Also if the goal of your current deck is big creatures then green is the best way to do it.

I've seen a lot of great Zegana decks too. My friend has a deck that drew 258 cards in a turn (thanks to 5 Master Biomancers and he won since Labratory Maniac was on board). So card draw is definitely a Prime Speaker Zegana decks bread and butter.
