The New Alter System: Allowing Online Links

I REALLY like the new alter system implementation. However, I do so wish if we could link to online sources or upload from online sources. Most of my alters that I use are just placed on a url, not actually downloaded. So downloading all of these can be a pain.
For a reference: Here's a list of my alters that I use.

Also, this is actually an imperative inclusion: We must have the ability to input the SOURCE LINK into the alter we upload onto T/O somehow. Because many artists will have copyright protection on them, and we could get sued for not having a function to credit the original artists for their work.

I'd also appreciate if we could have altered cards (and foils, for that matter) displayed as our commanders. As far as I know, that is currently not possible.

My TO alters folder is going to be about 140 megs, and that is limiting to what is going into the site. It will eventually soar as I take in requests. This alter thing alone will probably add a couple of gigs to the site.

HOWEVER!
There are some rules and guidelines we have to put into place when considering using other people's alters for your personal viewing pleasure. This does not apply to the alters people do themselves because obviously they need to sell them.
The rules that I'm going to try and enforce are the same rules that WotC enforces:
- Any and all important card information must not be covered or absent in the alter. (Meaning, FAMOUSWATERMELON, that Wurmcoil Engine alter is a nono.) Exceptions are to card name considering we use that to link the card itself. So rules text, card type, P/T and Converted Mana Cost must not be covered.
- We must restrict the use of nude images for use of alters. While we don't have to be as strict as WotC in these terms, I believe that certain rules apply like no nudity or pointless sexualization (anime girls on basic lands for example).

Indeed it is, but the main purpose is for the overlays is to read what the cards say and understand them without having to open them into a new page.
I've got some back-up images coming up for ya. So don't fret.

Okay, thanks yeaGO. I'll create the thread after I've finished uploading some of the basic stuff to my profile. I'll try to keep my profile's alter list the central hub for people to use. Since you can use other people's profiles, keeping them all in one place for everyone to look at seems ideal.

Oh, FAMOUSWATERMELON, there's a trick to using my list. The alters come in pairs with a certain url. What this means is that one url is the source url, while the other is the shortened url to a potentially cropped version. The list was created for untap.in in mind, and they have a 100 character limit, hence the need to shorten the urls. Tinyurl and gyazo are the two most common images that actually are usable, while there are some others that can be used as they are, you can tell these out by if they end in .png or .jpg.
So in short, urls should come in pairs. If there is a gyazo or tinyurl url below a specific url, that means that gyazo or tinyurl are cropped/shortened url versions. I highly recommend taking the gyazo ones, as those are properly cropped.
Actually, FAMOUSWATERMELON, just let me know which ones you want uploaded and I'll upload them for you, as there is no need to have duplicates in the system. You can access anyone's alter database by just putting that particular user's username in where yours is in the url when you access your own alter list.

The ones in my list are from your list xD
BUT I will update my list with new alters that I may find. For the moment I will focusing on retrieving images on alters that I or my brother (blind guardian) own irl.

Awesome, thanks Femme! You should probably make a list of all alternate cards (well, as they are input into the system) to keep track of it, because this is rapidly going to get out of hand. Users could then select the promo they want before uploading their own, as it would create a duplicate.

I'm tagging you guys so that you can learn of the criteria and updates that are going to be occurring around the alter database. Please note, these do not apply if you are uploading images of alters that you own/created/are currently trying to sell.

I actually found some "Alters". The main part of them(99%) are user created mockups for judge rewards so they probably are pretty pointless but hey, it's something.

I won't be enforcing these criteria or preferences to any great extent. I just think it would be easier if we had one large alters list for everyone to access and to have it quality controlled.
