Trade Initiation

Why is trade initiation only available to upgraded users? I'm just curious. I thought the idea was for people to be able to keep track of trades without vouches and such but if non-upgraded users trading can't do that, it seems to be more work for everyone.

To protect people from scammers was the stated reason,

But there's a cancel button...why is there a problem?

I don't know -- I don't trade.

At the risk of sounding authoritarian, users seem to sometimes forget that trading is a privilege (just as membership is). We facilitate trading between users by providing binder pages and the rest of the infrastructure, but trading is not the purpose of the site. It's an additional function that we like to offer to dedicated users as a way of expanding site usability and user experience.

What we don't want is to deal with the administrative headache of witch hunting the scammers. Generally speaking, we'd rather limit trade functionality to control scammers' opportunities than adopt a laissez-faire attitude and more reports. Even now, there are people who create "binders" in decklists to circumvent the 45-day wait period on real binders.

Now, we're certainly open to suggestions. This doesn't mean that your suggestion will be implemented. But we will at least consider alternatives.

The only other way i personally can see it being done differently is having a specific admin trusted by epoch and yeago to sit around all day handling trade issues. Similar to deckbox.org honestly. That would kind of be ripping off their idea though and we're our own thing so I'm not sure. Either way, it's a lot of hassle to fix something that's not entirely broken.

The point is to prevent fraud, though, not to do damage control. I help users with scam investigations basically because I love you guys and I think it should be handled, but TappedOut really doesn't guarantee itself as a completely safe trade haven. Trades are still interactions between individual people, and we don't regulate them unless we're called on to stop someone who's an obvious scammer. Plus, regulating disputes is really not a good use of administrative time if the problem (a severe problem at that) could be otherwise prevented in most cases.

I agree with.you man. Like i said the system is mostly not broken so why fix it? The only reason i say mostly is because due to the anonymous nature of the internet, people out there will always try to work that system. What you guys do with this site is pretty damn good and is the reason I've pretty much started using it over db as you feel like you know a lot of the users almost personally after interacting with them on the forums
