what's with all the deck names these days

TappedOut forum

I look at the deck recently posted area and I see all these stupid names that have nothing to do with the deck. Esper control, need help is a fine name, but, and I quote "show me your booties" was one I saw. I mean come on. Can somebody explain this to me, or has this amazing deckbuilding website been turned in to a website where you make a deck with a stupid name, put on false tags, and say to your friends, "my deck is better than yours because it has 4000 views and 40 comments.

The names these days are kinda stupid, and I'll admit I have one of those decks (Another Vampire Deck WIth No Fancy Name Not advertising, using example, though you can still take a look :P). I've seen a few with amazing names however

actually its not "show me your booties" its Show Me Your Boobs and its actually a joke me and my friends have.

Show me your boobs does have something to do with the deck. Theres Thoughtseize which lets me see my opponents hand essentially having them show me their HAND.

glad my decks name had a lasting impression on you randomguy123

Remember, opinions are like assholes...

I find it easier to link my decks when it's named something weird. When linking decks that have the same name it normally links to the first deck with that name.

not to mention how many decks have you seen named [guild name] [play style]. How many mono red decks have you seen named RDW. It's incredibly boring.

oh well, can't please everyone

haters?

@notamardybum.

I meant show me your boobies. Apperantly spellcheck doesn't like that word

@brokendwarf

I know what you mean, I do the same thing I'm complaining about to an extent. I just put parentheses after it saying what it is.

@notamardybum

Yes, I agree it was a little boring, but having a good name with the playstyle included eg. Dimir Stealin all your stuff would be a lot better for me than suck on this.

well for one, who cares? but more seriously, it seems like there is more deckcycling these days, and i haven't even been a member for very long, but when i first started using T/O i would consistently get comments and suggestions when i would cycle. now, you cycle and 20 minutes later its damn near off the radar. its a ploy to try and entice people to check it out. you can see the mana colors. you already have an idea of what might be going on. i see a funny deck using colors i like, i check it out cause i may be able to help, or get ideas... what does sorta annoy me is when a deck is tagged standard and its not. cause i typically check out more standard decks than anything to see what people come up with. but i don't make forum posts about it i just click "back" and keep peepin decks.

I dont think this site is meant to be a reference guide for people building decks. If you looking for something specific that's fine, i just look at the colors I'm running and danm the name. I'm looking for ideas not a check list. Explore a little and the weird deck name is just the flavor

October 24, 2013 11:28 p.m.

Moved to TappedOut forum.

Deck names are a means of advertising. An interesting or ridiculous name can draw extra views, which can translate to extra comments. Given the number of decks on the site, a large part of getting feedback is giving users a reason to click on your deck when it's in the queue.

I think funny names are good to have but define "funny." It used to be jokes or puns that caused you to think about it and then laugh at the ingenuity of the joke. Now it's just slapstick and inappropriate language. Now define "inappropriate." It's hard to convince someone that "vampiric rapehouse" is inappropriate if the person grew up talking like this to the point where it becomes vernacular (no particular offence to you magicmike).

Or they name it that just because they can. They do it as if challenging people to object. "What are you gonna do about it, huh?" Well, I'm not going to do anything besides make a mental note of this person's attitude. In the future I'd be less likely to help that person. If I ever suggest a person to stop being so harsh, it's because of genuine care. Now I know that's not how everyone functions, but it's so much easier on life to be open-minded.

Well, those are my thoughts. Again, no particular offense to magicmike. Hope you don't take it the wrong way

October 24, 2013 11:56 p.m.

Well, I usually try to make a clever name. Ill admit, I've got two using Mischief Brew lyrics, but typically the name lets in on the theme, or general plan of the deck. E.g, Ack! Humans! is a human themed aggro deck, where as I "bant" see you is a play on words turbofog deck.

So while there are a lot of names that make no sense, there are gems that do make sense, and even though we may not like naming decks silly things, it helps us to identify which deck is which, and maybe increase interest in the deck as well. I remember before rotation, I had three different esper builds for standard, and each one was named "Esper for standard." That got confusing, really fast.

Another theory I have is this: You will feel a bigger connection to a deck if the name has more meaning to you than "Jund Control." And if you have a bigger connection to the deck, you will enjoy playing it more, and its noticable when you play it. Every one of my casual friends was sad when I dismantled my casual deck enter the science, and they still refer to it to this day as that name. THey hated that it won, somehow, but the games were enjoyable, and the name stuck

TL;DR Wierd names build a connection to a deck, they get views, they help to remember which is which, and they can even give acknowledgement to an outside source, (eg, my naming decks after song lyrics by the band Mischief Brew.)

i think what randomguy and i, vampirelazarus, are trying to say is that its good to have deck names like yours where they actually have a connection to the theme of the deck instead of something like "you me bed now" or something dumb like that. by all means, don't name your deck RDW or Esper control.

October 25, 2013 12:21 a.m.

@Tempest: None taken. Opinions are opinions and everyone has them. I'm not going to let a couple of people telling me to change the name of my deck affect me, everyone has a different sense of humor, and I think stumbling into a vampire-ran house of sexual abuse is quite amusing. To some I can see how it might be immature and morbid but eh, no skin off my back. :)

I actually avoid the decks with stupid names, when I'm checking out decks on here I want to know what I'm about to look at. If i'm looking for ideas on something specific, the last thing I want to do is go back and fourth between a couple dozen decks only to find out that none of them have anything to do with what I'm looking for because it was labeled and tagged wrong. Like the example you mentioned about "show me your boobies" yeah sure you'll get some more views because little kids see it and go, wow boobies, but I see it and just move right on past it, I'm not looking for a boobie deck and the title of it tells me nothing about it so instead of wasting time clicking back and fourth I just don't even look.

APPLE01DOJ

Fifty Shads of Grey!

Which is a terrible book. It was originally supposed to be a Twilight fan fiction. This series never got an editor.

I much prefer the classic that was translated into many languages. The Story of O.

Also for the op, a point with the psychology of T/O is that unique and creative stuff gets more views and likes. Many of my decks are never seen before, or are alterations that work to wonderful degrees. Hence why they do so well.

October 25, 2013 4:09 a.m.

Another point to make is we have hubs for classifying decks. You can have a creative name that has nothing to do with 12-post, but if you put it in the 12-post hub, then we will know its 12-post.

Of course, that doesn't work on the front page, but there is more to the site than the front page.

... Tappedout has always been a website where you can put a dumb name and false tags onto a deck and it gets upvotes, in fact most upvotes are gives based on anything besides the actual decklist, the reason for this is because the upvote system is purely a popularity contest system based on other website's like systems, if it were really a system where it only got upvotes for being a really good deck there wouldn't be as many thrown around, like how I do my upvotes for example, I think it's been over a year since I last did an upvote on someone's deck, and I look at quite a few lists each day.

I don't see that much of a problem of it as longs as the names have something to do with the deck. Like my Esper decks is named 'No, you won't" because you won't do what you want to do.

If you want to have a deck that glorifies a house full of overly sexed and hungry vampires, I would expect a name like:

From Dusk Till Dawn

Quinton Terantino's Wet Dream

Salma Hayek Works Here

Or something more creative the "Vampire Rapehouse", but that's just me...

Lol
