One option is to wait for the summer; Modern Masters will be out this summer, a set filled with casual staples for players breaking into modern.#

ive know of that for a few month and the set is in very hard demand that it is near impossible to pre-order it (although i am getting a box), the set is not confirmed yet and some cards may go up in price or down pending artwork. Also, why wait for june or july when i want to play modern now for the upcoming PTQs and my locals which is stating it in Jan.

Well now you've defined that you want to play Modern right away, looking at deck archetypes would be a start. Asking for generic staples isn't very useful as Modern is a very varied format with very different cards between the popular decks and others. You should pick an archetype or create your own strategy, and from there the cards you'll need will become more obvious.

Start saving up money for Tarmogoyf and Snapcaster Mage .

You either need one, the other, or both to play a deck that holds any real water.

@zandl Affinity needs/wants neither. Arcbound Ravager on the other hand...

Well. Yeah. Ravager will run you the same price as Snapcaster Mage , but Affinity is a lot easier to stop than most decks that run Snapcaster Mage . A well-aimed Creeping Corrosion can flat-out win you the game.

I've never seen someone run that even in sideboard. (My personal experience.)

I do. And it wrecks their shit - because no one sees it coming.

@ zandl, what about tron? that is what Im planning on playing and it doesn't run either of those cards. Tron is actually rather cheap except for the eldrazi gods

It is rare to see though, I would have to play v.s. you like I do every other deck, lay enough things to be a threat and wait for the wipe. Game 1 probably mine on speed. (I've yet to see goyf outrace ravager ever.) You get game 2 more than likely due to unexpected wipe. Game 3 is a tossup. Thoughts?

But it's very fragile and doesn't really do anything in the first 3 or 4 turns. It's very wide open to hyper-aggressive decks (like Tempered Steel /Quest for the Holy Relic ) or basic land-destruction, like Ghost Quarter or Tectonic Edge .

Or if your opponent just plays Blood Moon , you're suddenly behind by, like, 3 turns.

That was @2austin5, btw.

Understood.

Stony Silence is also a very curious sideboard card against Ravager.

Either way it's still a very strong archetype.

true but depending in what color tron you are running you can do a W/U counter tron with o-ring, Spell Snare , Mana Leak . As for the land destruction, that one is tougher to avoid but may be semi-avoidable if there is a crucible and they have no artifact destruction which isn't likely but is plausible

I'm not detracting from the power of Affinity. If you aren't prepared for it, you'll get destroyed.

With Modern FNMs coming up, you can try your hand at brewing a deck rather than netdecking a tier 1 deck.

But where's the fun in that?

Honestly though, I want to make Life From The Stinkweed Scholar's Birthing Ooze modern viable. Thoughtseize is retarded expensive though.
