How does Koth's emblem work?

Asked by catbarian 14 years ago

so... we got into this debate about how is it that Koth's Emblem works... you see, acording to my friends, Koth's Emblem gives my Mountains the ability to "Tap: do 1 damage to target creature or player." however this is where the debate starts! they say that if i try to kill a creature with protection from red... i cant! since they say that the damage is coming from a "red" source! i tell them that although the ability came from a red source, it's my mountains the one's that are doing the damage(colorles source) if it where the other way around if the Emblem said something like "This does 1 damage for every mountain you control." then it where possible... any help clearing this out?

the emblem came from a red source which is koth (but im pretty sure emblems dont even have color but i may be wrong on this)

the emblem grants your mountains tap: deal 1 damage to target creature or player the thing to remember is that lands are colorless so the damage is coming from a colorless source which means it can target and even kill anything that has pro-red.

it doesnt matter if the source that granted the ability is red or not it doesnt change the color of the permanent using the ability ( which is the source of the ability)

The emblem they are trying to describe would have to read

This emblem is red Tap a mountain: This emblem does 1 damage to target creature or player.

in case i didnt make it clear the damage comes from a colorless source (the mountain) so it can kill the pro-red creature.

hope this clears up the issue

@Xeratheenigma,

You have it exactly right about the emblem being colorless as well.

Emblems are objects (S109.1) that exist in the command and whose abilities function in the command zone (S112.6m & S113.4) and have one or more abilities but no other characteristics (S113.1).

They are even more specific thought as S113.3 specifically states:

"An emblem has no characteristics other than the abilities defined by the effect that created it. In particular, an emblem has no name, no types, no mana cost, no color, and no expansion symbol."
