Ancestral Vision and Rebound?

Asked by BlueWolf15 14 years ago

For Ancestral Vision to have rebound, would it have to be suspended before or after I played Cast Through Time ?

It is cast after the last time counter is removed, so as long as Cast Through Time is on the field when the 4th counter on Ancestral Vision is removed the spell will rebound.

It would not. Time counters are part of the "Suspend" mechanic; you only put time counters on it when you use that mechanic. Using Suspend to exile a card and put some time counters is just using a mechanic, not casting the card.

This particular mechanic causes the card to be cast at the end of its run (when the time counters are all removed), but casting and Suspend are two entirely separate things.

Another way to put it: When you cast ancestral-visions, you're putting the card's effect into play, not suspending it - Suspend is merely an alternate way to cast the card (or in the case of this card, one of the ONLY ways to cast it).

So, Rebound, which casts a card, exiles it, and casts it again, does just that - casts the card - and doesn't do anything with Suspend. If Cast Through Time is in play when the last time counter is removed from ancestral-visions, then you'll draw 3 cards, exile it, then draw 3 cards again at your next upkeep.

Well-put, Magnor.

Actually, it won't rebound. The reminder text for rebound reads, in part, "Exile the spell as it resolves if you cast it from your hand". When a suspended card has the last time counter removed from it and it is cast, it is being cast from exile, not your hand, and therefore does not rebound.

Oh, wow. That's an excellent point sporkife. Totally forgot about that little line of the mechanic.

The only way, then, that you could rebound Ancestral Vision is if something let you cast a card in your hand without paying its mana cost (because you can't pay Vision's mana cost, because it doesn't have one).

Something like Fist of Suns ? Or does it's replacement effect not apply since you don't actually pay the mana cost, but pay for Vision's Suspend ability instead?

Since it (Ancestral Vision ) doesn't have a mana cost, you can't cast it from your hand unless an effect specifically says "cast a card/any number of cards from your hand".
