Are lands permanents?

Asked by Legendinc 14 years ago

when a card has an ability along the lines of "When _ enters the battlefield, return target permanent you control to its owners hand"

can that permanent be a land?

for example: my friend has a white weenie Quest deck he has only three plains out, and no other land in his hand. quest-of-the-holy-relic is at 3 quest counters already.

he spends the three plains to bring out Kor Skyfisher , and has to return a permanent to his hand. he returns a plains and plays it again as his land for the turn. Quest is at four counters, and he has one mana to spend on something like a Kor Duelist thus bringing Quest for the Holy Relic to five counters, sac'ing it and bringing something like Argentum Armor

if the ability in question is Kor Skyfisher 's then the answer is yes

this is because kor skyfisher's ability says "return target permanent you control to it's ownr's hand" and a land is a permanent

but if the ability in question has the restriction "return target nonland permanent to it's owner's hand" like Into the Roil the answer would be no

To answer the actual question; a land is a permanent. Lands, creatures, artifacts, enchantments and planeswalkers all stay on the field after being played, and are classed as 'permanents', in opposition to instants and sorceries which are put into the graveyard after resolving.
