At what time does Kaervek the Merciless ability trigger?

Asked by s0m_the_Wise 14 years ago

if i have a Kaervek the Merciless imprinted on a mimic vat or hidden under a hideaway land at what time must he enter the battlefield for his effect to take place i.e. must he already be on the battlefield when a spell is cast or can he be created (or in the case of the land cast) in response to a spell being cast?

If you can spring him onto the field before your opponents spell resolves, then yes, he will trigger. Casting a spell is another way to say "Letting the spell resolve successfully."

brianguymtg is correct. All you would need to do is make sure that your Kaervek the Merciless is on the board before his spell resolves and his ability would trigger.

To add to brianguymtg and Leardawg;

If you want Kaervek the Merciless on a Mimic Vat , If said opponent casts, Khalni Hydra you could activate Mimic Vat in respons to the spell on the stack. If I am correct, Last In First Out (L.I.F.O), the resolution of the Stack would result in Kaervek the Merciless 's ability to trigger due to the Khalni Hydra causing 8 damage to target creature or player.

SO, for Mimic Vat or even a Hideaway Land i.e.Howltooth Hollow it would have to be at the End of the Spell stack BUT before the Stack Resolves.

I believe you are mistaken. Kaervek has to be on the field when the spell is cast. His ability activates when the spell is actually played, not when it successfully resolves.

It is the same reason why you can not cast Silence in response to someone casting a spell to counter it. The spell has already been cast, so it will not be stopped by Silence. If Kaervek is not out when the spell is cast, he can not interact with it while it is on the stack.

You're right my bad, I misread K, so you would cast want to cast him at the beginning of their main phase... my apologies

I should have remembered that because I won a game by shutting down my friends silence with the same reason... ha, short memory

Crothselm has it. To cast a spell is to pay its cost and put it on the stack.

Seconded. If it were when the spell RESOLVES, then you could make a Kaervek in response, but since it's when the spell is cast, nothing you can do.
