Basic lands in a colorless EDH deck?

Asked by dude1818 14 years ago

Since the general has no color, would I only be allowed to use land that produced colorless mana? And could I have creatures that produce colored mana but are colorless themselves (like Copper Myr )?

My understanding is you could not use basic land, or a myr that produces colored mana. Only cards containing mana symbols that are on your general may be used by you. Thus no myr and no basic lands. You have to find lands that produce colorless mana.

Okay, I looked it up and here's how it works. You CAN run basic land that produces any color, however, because that color is not part of your general the land instead produces colorless. That goes for anything that produces mana, including all the myr, they would all just produce colorless instead of what it says they would produce.

"A deck may not generate mana outside its colours. If an effect would generate mana of an illegal colour, it generates colourless mana instead. " ~~ http://www.dragonhighlander.net/rules.php

I think you still can not use the color Myrs, because the ruling goes that you can not use cards with mana symbols anywhere on the cards that are not in your General's cost. This is why you can't use any multi-lands that contain some of your General's colors, but one that is not included.

I don't know exactly if lands are considered to include the mana symbol they produce, or if it is now something that is known and is not part of the card. The ruling about making colorless mana is important for cards that say things like, "One mana of any color." That does not include any mana symbols so it would be allowed anywhere, but you are still restricted to your colors.

Okay, I just looked at it and yeah, the myrs would not be allowed in it unless it's Palladium Myr . When I saw that it said "effects" I assumed that it meant you could use myrs, they would just all produce colorless.

Lands shouldn't contain the mana symbol because then the rules of EDH contradict themselves because it states that lands of any type can be used, but if it would produce an illegal color it would just produce colorless.

"Lands whose type includes swamp, island, plains, forest and/or mountain (e.g.: basic lands, shocklands, dual lands, Shadowmoor special-basics, etc) DO contain the corresponding mana symbol(s) as per CR 305.6. As such, they may not appear in a deck unless the General is of the corresponding colour(s). " from http://www.dragonhighlander.net/rules.php

Looks like you're stuck with all the lands that either:

a) produce colourless mana

b) specifically say "one mana of any color" and don't have any mana symbols on them.

There are plenty, if you use the right search terms on gatherer, or look for other colourless EDH/highlander/legacy decks here on T/O

The General's mana cost defines what colour of mana symbols may appear on cards in the deck. Details

* Coloured mana symbols which may appear in an EDH deck are restricted to the colours appearing in the General's mana cost.* Lands whose type includes swamp, island, plains, forest and/or mountain (e.g.: basic lands, shocklands, dual lands, Shadowmoor special-basics, etc) DO contain the corresponding mana symbol(s) as per CR 305.6. As such, they may not appear in a deck unless the General is of the corresponding colour(s).* While Hybrid mana symbols may be played with either colour mana, they count as both colours. As such, they may only be played with a general which is ALL of the hybrid mana symbols' colours.

Phantos is correct, in the case of a colorless General all lands must only produce colorless mana regardless of their name. exp: Blasted Landscape or Blinkmoth Well , and Darksteel Citadel .
