Can a creature have both firststrike and doublestrike? If so is there a benefit to having both?

Can a creature have both? If they do have both, does the mechanic work as such that still only two sets of damage will be done, first strike damage and normal combat damage? Am I even understanding the way it works properly?

When combat damage is assigned, it's all assigned within the same combat damage step, at the same "instant" so to speak.
First Strike and Double Strike essentially create a second combat damage step that occurs before the normal one.
Creatures with First Strike deals its combat damage in this special early damage step. Creatures with Double Strike deals damage on both the early AND the normal step.
So while a creature can have both abilities, they're basically redundant. Double Strike is an upgrade from First Strike.
