Can a zero power creature kill a creature it blocks?

Asked by Dracog 13 years ago

If I'm swinging with a Glint Hawk , can my opponent equip a zero power creature, such as Birds of Paradise with Basilisk Collar and kill the Glint Hawk with deathtouch?

No.

Simple enough deathtouch stipulates that damage must be done to the creature for it to be considered letah.

Ref Comp rule 702.2b

"702.2b. Any nonzero amount of combat damage assigned to a creature by a source with deathtouch is considered to be lethal damage, regardless of that creature's toughness."

either way, you can only equip as a sorcery so he would have to wait until his turn to equip and then hope you'd be dumb enough to block. but like he quoted. 0 dmg isn't a "touch"

There actually were a group of creatures that had the ability to kill just by blocking or being blocked; it was informally referred to as "stoning" though there never was an actual keyword. See e.g. Thicket Basilisk , Cockatrice .

I mean a Birds of Paradise equipped with Basilisk Collar .

For context I was playing a mono green Summoning Trap deck and beating the tar out of him with 4x Glint Hawk and defending with Kor Duelist + Sword of Body and Mind when he tried to do this. Sadly enough, my card shop doesn't have an official judge. And if you can't tell from some of the questions I've posted lately, we have a lot of people who don't understand the rules.

KrazyCaley I'll see your Thicket Basilisk and Cockatrice , and raise you an Engulfing Slagwurm

It doesn't even wait till combat's over.
