Can I assign damage to a blocker that gets tapped?

Specifically, I'm attacking with card:Nath's Elite (with a +1/+1 counter - so it's a 5/3) and a Dread is going to have to block it. If I cast Stabbing Pain on the Dread, the Dread would tap, but could I still assign my damage to it?

Oops, I forgot that Stabbing Pain will make Dread a 5/5. So, it will also die in that last scenario since it will be taking five damage.

Alright, thanks for the explanation. I think I figured it out. I get priority after damage is on the stack, so if I cast it then it should work out. I ment to link stabbing pain but I forgot sorry about that.

Combat Damage is not on the stack anymore, but you can cast the spell either pre combat damage step, or during secondary main phase, either wors

It depends on when the Stabbing Pain is cast. Combat is split into three steps: The declare attackers step, the declare blockers step, and the damage step.
If you cast Stabbing Pain on the Dread anytime before blockers are declared, it will tap and be unable to block the card:Nath's Elite. Meaning that Dread will neither deal nor receive combat damage.
If you cast Stabbing Pain after Dread has blocked card:Nath's Elite, Dread will tap and the two creatures will still deal combat damage to each other. Assuming no other creatures or buffs are involved, card:Nath's Elite will take six damage and die. Dread will take five damage and live.
