Can I Aura Finesse and Mind Control an attacking creature to stop it from attacking me?

Asked by Legendinc 14 years ago

For example, I'm playing somebody and I have no creatures of my own, except for a Grave Titan which i had Mind Control led from my opponent.

my opponent then gets a card:Demon of Death's Gate out and attacks.

in response, can i play Aura Finesse , and transfer Mind Control from Grave Titan to card:Demon of Death's Gate?

also, if instead a Frost Titan was attacking me, and I had some other creature Mind Control led, and i was doing the above scenario, would i have to pay 2 more just to transfer Mind Control ?

Aura Finesse says instant, right? So you can do it before or after they declare attackers (do it before only if you are up against a titan or eldrazi). Once declared, you take control of their creature. The attack is cancelled effectively and you get a heavy beater without summoning sickness for your turn.

What I would do (this is personal preference) is take control of their Lotus Cobra and have a sac land on the field, or Birds of Paradise making sure you leave it untapped. Then when they see you are completely tapped out, they swing, you switch control, you take their card:Demon of Death's Gate, Grave Titan (or any titan), Ulamog, the Infinite Gyre etc. and send it back at them the following turn

In answer to the second question, since the opponent's Frost Titan is becoming the target of one of your spells, yes you do need to pay the extra or Aura Finesse will be countered in it's entirety.

506.4. A permanent is removed from combat if it leaves the battlefield, if its controller changes, if it phases out, if an effect specifically removes it from combat...(there's a bunch of other stuff, but we got the important bit =D)

It leaves combat when controller changes? So no combat damage goes through? I did not know that. Can you point out all the other stuff that takes it out of combat too... I'm just curious. =/

Alrighty, the whole ruling...

506.4. A permanent is removed from combat if it leaves the battlefield, if its controller changes, if it phases out, if an effect specifically removes it from combat, if its a planeswalker thats being attacked and stops being a planeswalker, or if its an attacking or blocking creature that regenerates (see rule 701.11) or stops being a creature. A creature thats removed from combat stops being an attacking, blocking, blocked, and/or unblocked creature. A planeswalker thats removed from combat stops being attacked.

So, in a nutshell, a creature is removed from combat if it leaves the battlefield, control of it changes, if it's taken out of combat by an effect or it stops being a creature. Planeswalkers can be removed from combat in pretty much the same ways.
