Can I redirect damage I'm dealing to myself to my planeswalker?

Asked by MagnorCriol 13 years ago

So let's say I've got Planeswalker Bob on the field on my side. (He's really powerful. Stronger than Bolas.)

Then let's say I then cast Flame Rift , which says it deals damage to each player.

I know that if an opponent sends a burn spell my way and it resolves, that opponent can choose to redirect the damage to my Planeswalker Bob...but do I have the same luxury? Can I command Bob to take the fall for me?

The rules I've read only ever say some variant of 'if a source an opponent controls...'; they never say one way or the other about the player himself. This makes me inclined to believe that I can't do it.

But they also don't really say I CAN'T do it, so it's worth clarifying.

If you control the damage, you cannot have it redirected to your planeswalker. I remember reading that in the rulings somewhere...

Until then maybe this article is good enough?

http://www.wizards.com/Magic/TCG/Article.aspx?x=magic/planeswalkers/week4 There is a section called "DEALING DAMAGE TO PLANESWALKERS."

thaimaishuu is correct.

You cannot redirect damage you are in control of away from yourself to a Planeswalker.

That's perfect. Thanks for the link thaimaishuu, this helps clear up one or two other niggles I had about PWs.
