can i split the x cost for Gelatinous Genesis in any way i want?

Asked by SwiftDeath 13 years ago

i play Gelatinous Genesis in my elf mana ramp deck and ussually use 43 mana to make 30 12/12's am i playing it wrong?

you have to put the same amount of mana into both X's.

so with 43 mana you would get 21 21/21 ooze tokens. not 30 12/12's or any other variant you could think of.

for it two work the way you are using it it would look like:

gelatinous genesis Y,X,G

put X Y/Y green ooze tokens onto the battlefield.

ok thanks but what happens if you use an even number like 20 do you get 9.5 9.5/9.5's?

Not unless your cards have silver borders.

(107.1. The only numbers the Magic game uses are integers.)

well what happens is you start with 20 mana then you use 1 for for the color requirement in GG which leaves you with 19 mana you then put 9 mana in each X then you try to put the 19th mana in one of the X's but becasue you can't put another mana in the second X you would be left with one mana floating. so you would only be able to get 9 9/9's but not 9.5/9.5's

in magic you cant break one mana into two halfs. though unhinged has cards that cost or produce 1/2 mana. as posted above.

When paying x costs, all instances of x on the card remain the same. So in this example if you want x=2 you would pay 4G and get 2 2/2 oozes. If you want 12/12 oozes, you would have to pay 24G and you would get 12 12/12 oozes.

so for gelatinous genesis you can only use an odd number of mana to pay for the entire cost of GG

That would be correct.
