Can I use Lagrella the Magpie to permanently exile creatures?

Asked by Eldrazi_Nugget 3 days ago

After Lagrella, the Magpie enters, I'm wondering if I could bounce or blink her while the ETB trigger is on the stack, and then returning the exiled creatures to the battlefield would never happen because they never "see" Lagrella leave in the first place.

No.

This used to work for Fiend Hunter because the return trigger and exile trigger were separate. This meant the return trigger tied to that fiend hunter and that fiend hunter exile trigger would resolve so it returns before it exiled, and the exile trigger would then happen. The new fiend hunter would then not have any memory of the original exile trigger, so would not attempt to return things the things it had previously exiled.

In the form formating, instead it is all one. So it has to return when it leaves, and if you flicker Lagrella, all you would do is flicker the rest of the stuff.

Ok so just so I understand, let's say I play Lagrella, she enters, and in response to her ETB, after I've selected her targets, I play Snap and return her to my hand. Snap resolves and now Lagrella is in my hand. How do I resolve the ETB trigger? Those targeted creatures should leave the battlefield still? But then will return immediately, essentially blinking each creature I've targeted?

MollyMabs last paragraph is slightly incorrect here. As Lagrella is gone before her ability resolves, nothing gets exiled at all. The “until…” portion of the text sees that the clause has already been fulfilled so nothing happens at all (not even flickering). Because of this, nothing gets +1/+1 counters.

Basically, Eldrazi_Nugget your initial question guess is correct.

Rule 611.2b: Some continuous effects [...] have durations [...]. If the [duration] ends before the moment the effect would first be applied, the effect does nothing. It doesn’t start and immediately stop again, and it doesn’t last forever.

Ah so there's really no utility at all to bounce my Lagrella in response to her own ETB. Thank you for the clarification.
