Can Proliferate affect damage that's being done at the same time?

Asked by Hodou 13 years ago

Let's say I hit the opponent directly with a Thrummingbird and a Corpse Cur. The Corpse Cur has a single +1/+1 counter on it, making it a 3/3.

Will Corpse Cur leave 3 or 4 poison counters on the opponent?

Now, let's say that the opponent has no poison counters. Can I proliferate the poison counters that I just put on them?

Yup, since the Thrummingbird ability triggers after it deals damage, and by that point there would already be a poison counter on your opponent.

The case of infect creatures attacking along with Thrummingbird has come up SO many times in a draft for me, it's not funny. Peppyhare is correct. Also, Corpse Cur only deals the 3 damage, as stated combat damage is dealt BEFORE you get to proliferate.

In the first situation Corpse Cur will put only three counters on the opponent. However, with the Thrummingbird 's attack you get to Proliferate, so you then get to add another, so they end up with 4 counters after all's said and done. (Note that the bird's Proliferate triggers upon combat damage, which means the damage has to be dealt, so it doesn't happen at the same time.)

In the second scenario, the answer's still yes, for the same reasons. Damage is all dealt at the same time, so both the poisoning Cur and the proliferating Bird damage at th same time. The damage takes one life and puts one poison counter on them, and the Bird's ability puts Proliferate on the stack.
