Can Unstable Footing be cast before Fog and after for the same effect?

Asked by theemptyquiver 13 years ago

For instance. Say I attack with a plague stinger that is pumped up with a Virulent Swipe and Distortion Strike . My opponent casts Fog . Bummer!

Can I respond after the fog with Unstable Footing for the desired effect? Does it matter if I cast unstable footing before or after?

My inclination is that it does not matter. I would just like some clarification so I don't make an ass of myself during a game! haha.

if you can cast as an instant and in respone to the fog i would say yes because the way it's ordered on the stack.

also i would say yes to the later as well because fog checks for damage then prevents it when it would be dealt and then unstable footing checks for damage prevention and stops it before its prevented.

End result: damage can not be prevented.

You can cast Unstable Footing before or after Fog and it will have the same effect. This is because of one of the golden rules of Magic:

101.2. When a rule or effect allows or directs something to happen, and another effect states that it cant happen, the cant effect takes precedence.

Order on the stack is irrelevant if they both resolve.
