Can you Mana Leak a card if it was played for it's madness cost?

Lets say you have a Putrid Imp out and you discard Reckless Wurm and play it for its madness cost, can an opponent Mana Leak it?

I'm pretty sure they can, since play is simply the older term for cast, as opposed to a "put onto the battlefield" ability. I could do with a little confirmation myself though, to be honest.

peppyhare is correct.

think of madness as an alternate casting cost that can only be paid when the card would be discarded.

yes because play is the same as cast and when a card is cast it is put on the stack after which your opponent has a chance to play instances before it resolves.

Thanks for the help, I was very unsure if they could or not.
