can you play a spell before consuming vapors rebounds?

Ok so I was playing this gamw yesterday and my opponent had a rafiq of the many equipped with a behemoth sledge and a meddling mage on the battlefield he ends his turn and my consuming vapors rebounds, in response to that I use a grasp of darkness to get rid of the meddling mage and being able to use the vapors on rafiq, but he didn't allowed me saying that he had already made his choice and I was unable to choose the meddling mage because he targeted it when my vapors rebounded. I said I was right because the spell was still on the stack and my grasp of darkness was able to resolve first making him unable to choose the mage because it was already dead. At the end he swung with rafiq and killed me dealing 12 damage... Who is right me or him? By the way can I stack scry with crystal ball and a voltaic key?, say I use crystal ball then untap it with thw key and scry again to scry a total of 4? Thanks!.
Meddling Mage (naming Consuming Vapors , right?)
If you let it get to your upkeep, the rebound triggers before you have priority (no player has priority during the untap step, and "at the beginning of [...] upkeep" triggers go on the stack before anyone gets priority as well), and the Consuming Vapors can't be cast, so it can't rebound and stays in exile. The last chance you have to kill the Meddling Mage is during their end step at various points.

Oh. Never mind, I can read. If the Grasp of Darkness (or other assorted kill spell) resolves before the Consuming Vapors does, and there's only 2 creatures on his side, then the Meddling Mage dies and he has to sacrifice Rafiq.
Crystal Ball ...yeah, scry 2, then scry 2 again. doesn't stack (poor poisonous and flanking)

You can't cast a spell before it rebounds, unless you cast a spell at the end of your untap step which I'm not entirely sure is possible. However, in your case, you were correct. Conuming Vapors rebounds and goes on the stack. If he does not respond to it, you can respond with Grasp of Darkness so that it will resolve before your Consuming Vapors. Consuming Vapors only targets the player and he does not get to choose what to sacrifice until the spell resolves.
As for the Crystal Ball, yes you can put both Crystal Ball effects on the stack at the same time using Voltaic Key, but the effects will occur one at a time, not combined into Scry 4.
