can you put a phylactery counter on an etched champion while metalcraft is active?

Etched champion makes me happy. Phylactery Lich also makes me happy. SO I went and built a deck that included playsets of both these lovely creatures.

Then I realized that phylactery lich is feeling a little less paranoid about his P token when it's on an artifact that has protection from all colors, so i started putting itr on the champion. Now, the question stems from the fact that often enough metalcraft is up and running before said Lich hits the board. Can his counter still land on the champion? Nothing on phylactery lich says "target". it just says, as though you were doing something totally not black, "put a P counter on an artifact you control"
"...put..." "...an artifact..."
I don't see this effect 'targeting' anything, thus my question: Can I my phylacteretchedlichampion deck with the apparent beautiful harmony it seems to possess?

A question, why does Day of Judgment destroy the Etched Champion , or for any creature with pro-white?
Doesn't make any sense in my head.

Protection:
prevents damage from the given source
prevents being targeted by the given source
prevents being blocked by the given source
prevents being enchanted/equipped/fortified by the given source
DoJ and so on do not target, and do not deal damage, so they kill things with protection.

Yeah, that's fine, for all the reasons you said.
It doesn't target or enchant, so it can go on the champion.
Watch out for day-of-judgement though, that kills prot creatures no problem.
