Canopy Cover vs Mind Control

Asked by kyozen 14 years ago

Ok, just a quick question..

Assuming my opponent has a creature enchanted with Canopy Cover , would I be able to Mind Control it?

No. Mind control is an aura which requires a target. Canopy cover states that the enchanted creature can't be the target of spells or abilities, so it cannot be the target of mind control.

(fun fact: in an older version of the rules, auras were ruled to continuously target whatever they were enchanting, so playing a canopy cover on something that was mind controled would cause the mind control to drop off - this is no longer true under the current rules

702.5. Enchant

702.5a Enchant is a static ability, written "Enchant [object or player]." The enchant ability restricts what an Aura spell can target and what an Aura can enchant.

I've read somewhere and I take this that anytime an aura enters the battlefield from a zone other than the stack it would still enchant an object of the specified type whether or not that object is shrouded.. so what gives?

If it is just an enchantment (not a aura) and has a global effect, like "White creatures you control get +1/+1" then it still affects creatures with shroud (because it doesn't "target" any specific creature. Could that be what you're thinking of?

no, if an effect (i.e. Replenish ) says 'return' to play, the auras are not cast, and auras now only target when they are cast and not continuously, so you can stick a Mind Control on a Kalonian Behemoth or what have you. Or just a Vampiric Link .

Or just a Vampiric Link . same thing happens with Sovereigns of Lost Alara - it's put into play, not cast, so I can get an Eldrazi Conscription on my Sphinx of Jwar Isle .

sporkife, that's not quite right, it still requires a legal target, even if it is not cast from your hand. "303.4f If an Aura is entering the battlefield under a players control by any means other than by resolving as an Aura spell, and the effect putting it onto the battlefield doesnt specify the object or player the Aura will enchant, that player chooses what it will enchant as the Aura enters the battlefield. The player must choose a legal object or player according to the Auras enchant ability and any other applicable effects." Creatures with shroud still can't be the target of Auras, even if you are moving it from another zone/not hardcasting it. (This is from the most recent rules update - July 16th).

Sovereigns of Lost Alara can still enchant shrouded creatures, however, because the attacking creature is not targeted by the ability or the aura.
