Cloning a levelled creature

Asked by kram130 14 years ago

If I cast Clone and I have a fully levelled Student of Warfare on the table, will the clone come in as 4/4 with double strike? I assume so as the student of warfare actually changes as its levelled.. just need same clarification as i want to run a clone/proliferate version of my levellers deck Venerated Ascension.

sadly no.

this because the student of warfare is a 4/4 due to its "level" ability and how many level counters the student has on it and seeing as the clone has no counters it would be a 1/1

Xera is correct. Counters of all kinds, and their numerous effects, are not copied by Clone . The exception are cards with "When CARDNAME enters the battlefield, put a TYPE counter on it," as Clone mimics the enters-the-battlefield effect of the creature. It does NOT, however, mimic "When you cast CARDNAME..." effects, as the cast trigger occurs before Clone shifts form.

Ok, what if we take control of said creature? Does it come with counters on it?

sgteads: Yes, if you take control of the creature, then it does come with the counters that are already on it.
