What happens when I Comet Storm a Precursor Golem?

Asked by neetbed 14 years ago

Let's say my opponent has Precursor Golem and the 2 additional tokens on the field, i then cast Comet Storm where X=3 and it is kicked once and my target is one of his golems, what exactly happens?

First, lets assume that your targetting only 1 of his golem tokens.

As your spell is announced and goes onto the stack, the ability of the Precursor Golem will kick in, and as such for that 1 targeted golem, a copy of the spell will go onto the stack for each other golem creature in play. That also includes Precursor Golem itself.

Now, if you played Comet Storm , and kick it, the spell has now more than 1 target, so the effect of Precursor Golem is checked and because there is more than 1 target, it doesn't replicate the spell to the other golems.

Reason? The wording on the card. "Whenever a player casts an instant or sorcery spell that targets only a single Golem"...

If your spell has more than 1 target, then the spell doesn't duplicate. And yes, that's even if the spell includes players and just one golem. (Players are different targets as well!)

A player is a different TARGET, but not a different GOLEM, don't you agree? Maybe it's being too into the words. :)
