Do Token creatures enter the graveyard?

Asked by DofusTal 13 years ago

As in, if I have a 1/1 myr creature token, and someone kill it, does it disappear or enter the graveyard?

Comp Rule 110.5f states that "A token thats phased out, or thats in a zone other than the battlefield, ceases to exist. This is a state-based action; see rule 704. (Note that if a token changes zones, applicable triggered abilities will trigger before the token ceases to exist.)"

So, the token will touch the graveyard, activating any "enters the graveyard" abilities, then will cease to exist as a state-based action.

In short, both. It'll enter the graveyard, then disappear.

It enters the graveyard, then immediately disappears next time state-based actions are checked.

It DOES, however, exist in the graveyard for just a moment, and can impact effects that care about creatures hitting the graveyard from play, for instance.

Also, if you make a token of something like Origin Spellbomb - say, using Prototype Portal - you have the chance to activate its card-draw ability before it disappears.

Anything that triggers an effect when hitting a graveyard, such as a token causing an effect of an enchantment, or the token that has an effect apon entering the grave will still trigger that effect.

This is important if you ever possibly get the effect of a Wurmcoil Engine under a Mimic Vat . All you'd need would be a fun way to get the creature into the grave (like Viscera Seer or Bloodthrone Vampire ) before the start of the end step, and bang, 2 3/3 tokens to enjoy :)

This then leads me to a follow up question, could a mimic vat and a kudoltha phoenix work if you use the phoenixes ability from the token for that split time it is in the graveyard?

Unfortunately not. It would cease to exist whenever you gained the priority to put the ability on the stack. Even if somehow you were able to put the ability on the stack, whenever priority passed to your opponent so they could respond to the ability, the token would cease to exist. No matter what, the ability couldn't resolve.

As a further speed bump, Kuldotha Phoenix 's ability is only usable during your upkeep, which would be a really weird time to kill and then resurrect a token.

Also, Mimic Vat shoots the token into oblivion (exile). So in that instance does not hit the graveyard

@muffludwig

If your referring back to my comment, then you'd note that Mimic Vat exiles the token at the beginning of the end step, so the token will still hit the grave if it does so by other means (like dying in combat or being sacrificed to an effect). Hence the 2 creatures mentioned in my last comment could be used as a means to sac the token, firstly to allow the token to hit the grave, and get the 2 tokens (if Wurmcoil Engine is the card under Mimic Vat ), and secondly depending on the method used to sacrifice the token, to get the desired effect.
