Does a single Knight Exemplar protect my other knights from mass removal?
Asked by CasualSax 13 years ago
So if I have a Knight Exemplar on the field along with 2 other knights, and my opponent casts consume the meek, do all my creatures die, or just the knight exemplar?

However if it was a damage giving mass removal spell, Slagstorm , and they took damage equal to or greater than their toughness they would all be destroyed.

AegairEtapa, I'm afraid you're incorrect. Knight Exemplar 's ability makes everyone indestructible, which means lethal damage doesn't kill them. So a Slagstorm would off the Exemplar, but leave the others unharmed (though quite vulnerable to the next mass removal spell).

The damage doesn't disappear to the end of the turn though. So once Knight Exemplar leaves the battlefield, the Knight's lose Indestructible and are destroyed.

I--
Hm. I see what you're saying, and I honestly had never thought about that. And further, I don't think anyone I've played with has either, though the number of times I've played in a "mass damage vs. knight exemplar & friends" situation is low.
This requires research! To the books! =p

Heh.. I probably should look up the rulebook more often. I am relatively new and have came last in a couple of tournies of FNM level. But I think my rules knowledge is about right.
But I believe this backs me up:
"700.4. If a permanent is indestructible, rules and effects can't destroy it. (See rule 701.6, "Destroy.") Such permanents are not destroyed by lethal damage, and they ignore the lethal-damage state-based action (see rule 704.5g). Rules or effects may cause an indestructible permanent to be sacrificed, put into a graveyard, or exiled.
119.6. Damage marked on a creature remains until the cleanup step, even if that permanent stops being a creature. If the total damage marked on a creature is greater than or equal to its toughness, that creature has been dealt lethal damage and is destroyed as a state-based action (see rule 704). All damage marked on a permanent is removed when it regenerates (see rule 701.11, "Regenerate") and during the cleanup step (see rule 514.2)."
Indestructible doesn't prevent damage, merely ignores it. Once it's gone the creature is destroyed due to it having suffered damage greater than or equal to it's toughness.

You're absolutely right (just came back from reading those same rules myself). That's an interesting little nugget that eluded my attention, and an important one considering I have a Knight Exemplar deck. =p Thanks for bringing that up.
As for reading the rules, becoming familiar with them is precisely why I started loitering on this Q&A forum - I found that answering other people's questions quickly helped me become a lot more familiar with the rules myself. Obviously, though, I'm still learning bits here and there.

Well all's well that ends well, I learn how to navigate the official rules and you know how a somewhat bad draw from a red deck can still get past your Knights. After all I'd be surprised if they didn't Lightning Bolt the first one.

oh aye, Slagstorm punks Knight Exemplar and buddies into next week. i don't run 3 in a meta with several good knight decks just because it has awesome art (which, incidentally, it does). damage stays until the cleanup step, which is fun, because it lets you do things with damage and burn spells and all sorts of mean things to people and their creatures. tehehehe Thrun, the Last Troll is safe from your Lightning Bolt ...uh...yeah... :D

@AegairEtapa - They usually would (and should); that's why I pack Silence s and Brave the Elements . Also, plan on getting two out. =p

only the knight exemplar would die. your other 2 two knights would live to fight another day.
