Asked by Shyachi33 13 years ago

if i make Chimeric Mass into a creature and put +1/+1 counters on it will it retain the counter even when it turns back to a regular artifact? of does it go away every time?

Yep, counters stick around on a card even if they were put there when the card was a different type.

The counters are permanent feats that can be put on permanents, basically a physical effect, rather than a temporary effect as one from Giant Growth .

Any permanent will retain it's counters as long as it stays on the battlefield. This means any kind of counters, Eg: gideon can get a +1/+1 counter from Ajani Goldmane when he is a creature, and it will retain that +1/+1 counter and its loyalty counter. they do nbot interfere and have separate purposes.

Since KrazyCaley has already answered the question I'm going to just add something that will hopefully help clarify some of the rules terminology from Scorpse's reply (the way he explains the interactions are correct, but the terminology is off a little):

A +1/+1 counter is precisely that a "counter" (see 121. Counters). Power/Toughness (P/T) modifying counters interact with continous effects in layer 7d (see 613.3d), what this really means is that +1/+1 and/or -1/-1 counters are considered after effects that set P/T and after non-counter effects that modify P/T (like Giant Growth ) but before effects that switch P/T (like Twisted Image ).

In Summary: By rules terminology +1/+1 counters are "counters" and the effect generated by Giant Growth is a "continuous effect".

For more information on this, see:

  1. Continous Effects

  2. Interaction of Continuous Effects.
