Does Dragonstorm make copies for spells cast and copied by Eye of the Storm?
Asked by DarkDestroyer 13 years ago
Just a question about the card eye of the storm. Say i cast two lightning bolts then dragon storm with eye of the storm in play. dragonstorm has storm and would copy twice for the two bolts. The next turn I cast a lightning bolt then eye of the storn would copy dragonstorm and two bolts. My question is when the dragonstorm copys through eye of the storm would dragonstorms "storm" ability cause it to copy again.
Since Eye of the Storm states that you may cast the copies without paying their mana costs, storm does indeed trigger. If you stack it right, you can get 3 storm triggers for a total of 4 Dragonstorm copies.

Hmm, tricky.
Eye of the Storm Lightning Bolt Dragonstorm
I'd say it would.
But this hinges on a potentially very specific definition. Storm's wording read "copy it for each spell cast before it this turn." Are copies of spells the same as spells?
I'm fairly certain that it does count for you, though. When I get a bit more time later this evening to pore through legalese, if someone else hasn't posted more definitively by then, I'll come back and post a comprehensive rules-backed answer.

I'll do that for you (it's not hard to find) :
111.1a A copy of a spell is also a spell, even if it has no card associated with it.
boom, headshot.

Lightning Bolt twice, Dragonstorm once, 2 copies of the spell on the stack. Third not, Dragonstorm sees 4 spells "cast" (the two copies of Dragonstorm aren't cast) so another 4 go on the stack.
In total, you get 7 dragons.

Eye of the Storm has very particular wording, and for a reason.
The important ruling on Eye of the Storm is :
The ability triggers when a player casts an instant or sorcery card. A copy of a card (such as those generated by Eye of the Storm itself) won't trigger this ability. The card that was cast is exiled and won't resolve, but the player will get a copy of the spell from Eye of the Storm.
Why this is important : Eye of the Storm specifies card to prevent itself from replicating into infinity and doing all kinds of retarded crap. Dragonstorm runs on the Storm mechanic itself, which is different.
Storm reads as "Storm (When you cast this spell, copy it for each spell cast before it this turn.)"
With Eye of the Storm in play, basically, every time you cast a spell that comes from a card, it is exiled, and does not resolve. Instead, a copy of it is generate and that copy is cast. This is different than something like Twincast , which simply copies it on the stack and allows you to pick new targets. The copies that Eye of the Storm creates are cast like spells, despite being copies.
This means they trigger Storm. HOWEVER, the Storm mechanic itself makes copies that do NOT cast, but are rather put into play.
So, in case.
Eye of the Storm is on the field.
You cast Lightning Bolt . It is exiled from the game and a copy of it is created.
You cast a second Lightning Bolt . It is exiled from the game, and a copy is created. You also get to create a copy of the original Lightning Bolt that was cast before it.
Right now, you've got 3 copies of Lightning Bolt kicking around that are cast. This means now when you cast Dragonstorm , it is exiled, and then a copy of Dragonstorm is cast, and it is copied three times.
When it resolves, you get your three copies of Dragonstorm from the Storm (which do not count as spell card casts), and then the actual casting of Dragonstorm itself, for a total of 4 dragons. However, Dragonstorm was only cast from a card once, meaning only one Dragonstorm copy is now sitting inside Eye of the Storm , with two Lightning Bolt s. Anyone who casts a spell now after this point will be getting the 3 spell copies that do cast each turn but do not copy themselves.

Eye of the storm copies spells that are exiled. And each copy is then 'casted' when a new spell is played.
So Lightening bolt cast the first time exiles and then is casted.
Second one is casted but exiles. 2 copies can then be casted on the stack.
Dragonstorm is casted but exiled. Now this is the tricky bit. Storm triggers the same time as the enchantment does. So if player controls both modes he chooses which go first.
Som ine the case where you control all...
1 (-1) + 1 for lightning bolt. Gives you 1x lightning bolt on stack. 1 + 2 for second lightning bolt gives you 2x lightning bolt on stack 1 + 5 (for stormed dragonstorm on stack) + 2x lightning bolt + casted dragonstorm with addituonal storm for 9.
BothCards were errated to state cast instead of play. Silly, isn't it?

Turn n-1: cast Lightning Bolt , exiled, copied, copy cast. cast Lightning Bolt , exiled, copied, copy of other Lightning Bolt , both cast. cast Dragonstorm , exiled. here you would cast the copies of the Lightning Bolt s first, then the Dragonstorm copy. since you cast the original [[Lightning Bolt]s and Dragonstorm , the storm count is at 8, so you get 9 copies of Dragonstorm on the stack.
Turn n: cast Lightning Bolt , exiled. cast all 3 copies of Lightning Bolt , then the Dragonstorm . storm count is at 4, so you get 5 copies of Dragonstorm on the stack.
If you have, uh, 14 dragons on the battlefield, you're probably going to win, especially if some of them have haste and the rest are Bogardan Hellkite s.

Surely when you first cast Dragonstorm the Storm effect of the spell will trigger, giving Stormed copies of the spell onto the stack. as the spell is being 'cast' in order for the Eye of the Storm effect to trigger...
Therefore when Dragonstorm is cast pre-Eye of the Storm , then the stormed stuff would trigger and stack as the spell is exiled. Giving 5 copies of Dragonstorm onto the stack, before it is exiled, and then the 2 Lightning Bolt and second copy of Dragonstorm is 'cast', giving another 8 copies?
Or am I wrong because Eye of the Storm is a static enchantment that covers both players, the static element overrides priority steps and immediately affects the spell without it being able to utilise such things as storm?
Also, please note, that Eye of the Storm has been errated so that 'play' is now 'cast'. Also same applies to Storm abilities.
Far as I was concerned, Soon as you cast something, Storm would trigger. Am I wrong?
