Does Electropotence check for Thought Gorger's power with counters?
Asked by DingoDan 14 years ago
Since both effects happen when the creature "enters the battlefield", do the counters get included as the creatures power?
NVM, not state based, but you are still able to put the counters on before you activate Electropotence.

The way I'm reading it, they both trigger when the creature enters the battlefield. Since they would go in the stack at the same time, you get to choose which order they resolve in. So, you can have Thought Gorger gain the counters first and then have Electropotence deal damage equal to its new power.

yeah I am with Crothselm for the most part. The only part that confuses it it that Electropotence is activated in response to a creature entering, placing it on the stack after Thought Gorger . So the way i see it is that:
Thought Gorger ability goes on the stack
activate electropotence which is added to the stack
They resolve in reverse order.
This would be completely different if it said that it "as an additional cost discard your hand. comes into play with x counters on it, where x is the number of cards that you discarded this turn"

So the answer is that the counters doesn't get counted in for Electropotence ? Have to be 100% certain.

Gatherer on Electropotence says:
You target a creature or player when the ability triggers. You decide whether or not to pay 2R as the ability resolves.
It seems like as they would trigger at the same time, as Crothselm thinks as well.
Some clarification would be nice :)

If what you say is correct about the mechanics of Electropotence then yes they trigger simultaneously and you get to choose the order in which they are placed on the stack.

It's copypasted from gatherer rulings, so yes, they are correct. And thanks for clearing it up!

Just to be absolutely clear Thought Gorger 's counters are added as part of a triggered ability since it says "When Thought Gorger enters the battlefield.." and not ""Thought Gorger comes into play with..." like you see on say Spike Weaver .
Additionally Electropotence is also a triggered ability that will trigger when the Thought Gorger enters the battlefield.
So in this scenario when thought gorger enters the battlefield the next time triggered abilities are checked you can choose which order to add those abilities to the stack since they both triggered since the last time triggered abilities were checked. I can clarify when triggered abilities are checked if needed, just ask if you're unsure.
As a result it is your choice whether to apply the +1/+1 counters before or after the Electropotence . Though I have to admit I don't see why you wouldn't...still it is a choice =)

Electropotence's ability is trigger activated, not when it "enters the battlefield", and Thought Gorger's is a state based action, so Thought Gorger gets the +1/+1 counters before you could even activate Electropotence's ability. I believe this is correct.
